Hi, everyone
I’ve taken a few days off over the last week, largely to catch my breath and cope with the problem of the four of us being trapped inside the house. (As a cancer survivor, I’ve had strict orders to stay indoors as much as possible – the letter I got from the NHS veers between practical advance and bureaucratic CYA.) It’s starting to gnaw on me, even though I know I’m one of the lucky ones. Many of my friends are in essential roles, facing the threat of infection as well as everything else; others are on furlough, facing the risk of losing their jobs, houses and such like as the country takes its first hesitant steps back to normality. It’s striking to see just how many knock-on problems there are, each one requiring solutions that cause additional knock-on effects.
For example, wages are reduced or lost altogether; people can’t pay rent. Landlords are ordered to minimise evictions where possible; landlords can’t pay their mortgages (or whatever) because they’ve lost their source of income. Landlords get mortgage relief, banks start having money problems shortly afterwards. It’s easy to think the banks are wealthy, but the blunt truth is that, if a number of mortgages are never repaid, the banks may be in some trouble. And if they start to totter, a lot of other things will come crashing down.
It’s strange to see how people react. Panic-buying toilet paper makes a certain amount of sense (I actually did that in Malaysia, partly because it was never easy to be sure it would be in the shops when you needed it.) A lot of the shortages make sense too – long-life milk, pasta, rice … things that can be storied for a long time, without a fridge or freezer. We’re living in interesting times. It’s fairly clear why that’s considered a curse.
Anyway …
Everyone keeps asking about The Artful Apprentice. I’m just waiting on the final set of edits (hopefully this week) and once they’re done, the book will be published.
I’ve finished Nanette’s Tale, with the intention of adding it to Fantastic Schools II. Fantastic Schools I should be out in May.
I’ve also been looking at some of my older plots. The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea – Their Darkest Hour II – is probably writable, with some minor edits. The original version was too close to other books for my peace of mind, even if the story IS set in the UK. I’ll see about doing it at some point, sooner rather than later (if people are interested). I’ve also been studying the old The Succubus who fell in love story and thinking about finalising the plot.
There’s also The Royal Sorceress V: The Revolutionary War. I’m still thinking about it, but the first set of ideas are too close to a few older books for them to work.
Anyway … I start Knife Edge (The Empire’s Corps 17) tomorrow.
Chris
Ah, a return to their Darkest Hour would be utterly fantastic! I would absolutely but that!
Any ideas for a Fall of Night sequel? Still the best book I have ever read, works well as a standalone, but what if? lingers in my mind
Anyway I am really glad you are doing alright as much as you can be really, hopefully the light is at the end of the tunnel
*buy that
Chris, glad to hear you are doing ok. I am a high risk and have been at home as well. Keep safe!
For me, glad you are working on Empire Corps! my favorite of all your serials.
Take Care!
(Yes, I know it’s hard to take care when the world turns insane. It’s hard for me to stay sane right now.)
Please please the devil and the deep blue sea asap
As a random reply about a random scene in this series, but from the heart:
Recently I have been reading several uninspired and weak fantasy stories, and today I found myself re-reading your 8th SIM book.
I was again hugely impressed with the scene where Emily confronts King Randor when a certain pregnancy was announced. Such a great execution! 3 so very different characters together in a difficult situation. You managed to express Randor as a very unlikable man, but with the strength of character to allow leeway to Emily when she disregards all proper protocol, while at the same time still feeling a certain amount of respect for his position while also hating his arrogance. And having Alicia there as a 3rd person – almost a bystander – a contrast and a display of a ‘normal’ aristocrat emphasizes the strong characters of both Randor and Emily and the relationship they have at that point. That one short scene makes me stand in awe again and makes me understand why you are one of my favorite writers for a few years now.
Respect!
At the same time: please stay safe and muddle true this difficult pandemic as we do here in the crowded Netherlands: Self-Isolation is also NOT easy here 😦
Thank you!
Chris
Chris, for the last couple of days, since at least Sunday (4/19/2020), I have been unable to reach Chrishanger.net. My computer tells me that Web site has been Blocked. Is this a problem for only me or a small number of people, or is it a wider problem, and how soon will it be fixed? I have been following you and visiting your Blog for at least 4 or 5 years, and this is the first time I have had this problem.
I was able to do this only from my Email messages, where I got this message from you. Your Blog web site is still blocked to me as of a couple of minutes ago.
Could there be something bad (malware or virus) on my computer that is blocking me from reaching you? As far as I know this is the only web site that is blocked to me. I can reach Andrew Rowe’s web site and Reddit with no problems. He is the other author who I contact regularly on his Blog and Redit.
It must be. Everything is working fine here.
Is anyone else having problems?
I got to you via getting your message on my Email account and then responding to it. Your Blog was still blocked to me as of a couple of minutes ago.
I am glad you and your family are doing well through this. Sometimes you need a bit of a break. Thanks for all of the great books you write. I look forward to the next set of books that I’ll be purchasing in the near future.
This is what I get when I try to call up Chrishanger.net directly, in several ways.

Your website is currently suspended and this is a default page for website windows hosting by seekdotnet.com. They say to contact them about questions or problems.
But when I try going there it is a bad or missing address. What the hell?
There was a payment glitch. It should be working now.

Thank’s Christopher for the update on The Empire’s Corps. I’ve been waiting for that one for a long time. Very glad to here you are OK now. Please stay that way!! Other Sci Fi authors are OK but you have a ‘believability’ written into yours.
In these unprecedented times your story telling allows us to travel to other worlds and forget (for a time) the awfulness of the current situation. Looking forward to the Artful Apprentice, Nadine’s tale and a return to one of my old favourite arcs The Royal Sorceress. Stay safe Chris.
Glad you’re staying safe. Great news about the Artful Apprentice, and I’m delighted that the Royal Sorceress will be back! You’ve made my day.
Are you going to finish the ark royal series?
Yes. It’s on the list.
Chris
Excited to hear Artful Apprentice is coming out soon. Your stories are amazing and i wait excitedly for each book and only get upset after i read the last chapter and realize i have to wait months to hear more of your stories in that world. Best wishes and hope you stay healthy.
I’ve been wondering what Void did for the dragon for some time. What do dragons need help with? Can’t be laundry.
I just downloaded the Artful Appreciate here is a link. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087PLWL5V/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=nuttall+books&qid=1587940672&sprefix=nutall&sr=8-11
Chris, you make i smile, on the first page. “She looked around with interest”. I love that phrase!
Fabulous, so looking forward to reading it!
Also, quick question regarding book 16 of the Empire’s Corps series, Favour The Bold; will it be available on audiobook like the previous ones?
Cheers and take care!
Yes, it’s on the way.
