Updates

23 Feb

Hi, everyone

Good news first – I’m currently thirteen chapters into The Artful Apprentice (Schooled in Magic 19), in which Emily starts her long-awaited apprenticeship with Void.  I’m hoping to get the first draft completed by the first week of March, health permitting.  No cover yet, but it’ll be posted when I have it.

In related news, Alassa’s Tale will be released in audio on March 3rd.  I’ll post a link on the Facebook pace when it comes out.

Bad news – I’ve managed to cough my way into a sore throat.  It feels like I’ve damaged something at the back of my mouth … sigh.  Thankfully, it’s a relatively minor problem compared to the others I’ve had over the last two years.

Anyway, this is my planned schedule for the next few months.  No promises, as always.

March – Cast Adrift (new universe, yet another try to break into the higher levels of publishing.)

April – Knife Edge (The Empire’s Corps 17).  I decided on a direct sequel to Favour The Bold and do the side story later.

May – Oathkeeper (SIM20).  Emily will still be in her apprenticeship at this point.

June – Ark Royal 15.  The Lion and the Unicorn.

July – not sure – probably SIM21.

Thoughts?

Chris

Waiting for more Kat Falcone and Learning Experience. I’ve enjoyed them most of all.

If you need a little help is deciding what to do in July…SIM 21 – yes please!

Firstly get well, you need to take care of yourself.
Ark, TYE and Cast Adrift are what I am looking forward to, unfortunately the SIM series holds no interest for me but I am sure others will enjoy them.
I have been working my way through your back catalogue since finding your books, I just finished the Democracy Series do you plan to go back and do book 3 at some point?
    Thanks

I like the SIM quite a lot. And am not so much into Ark etc… don’t know about Cast Adrift yet though. Each to their own I suppose. It is an interesting notion about “breaking into higher levels of publishing”. So that is why you are coming up with new universes all the time…

Im always down for SIM series. Is Cast Adrift a completely new universe/series?

Get as much rest as needed to feel better and strong as can be. I’ve been reading your books for seven years now and you’re my favorite author. Whatevee you choose to write I always appreciate it.

Yes, Cast Adrift is a new universe.

Slightly similar to a non-published series of Chris’s but from what I’ve seen different.

I wonder if Void knows about that Oath of Emily’s.

The Late Grandmaster knew and might have told Void.

I believe he knows something. I can’t remember when, but when he was “fixing” her mental barriers, he saw it. I don’t know if he knows the details.

Will we ever find out what happened to Hasdrubal’s soul? It would be fun if Emily encounters the demon universe again. Perhaps Nanette will summon them and Emily will have to respond to save the world? Hasdrubal reaching out and communicating with her somehow? Anyway, can’t wait for Emily’s apprenticeship!

On your cough – I have to talk in front of people at least once a week.

I have found that a spoon full of honey will let me stop coughing for a hour
or two and then I have to get another spoon of honey.

I do that mainly in emergencies on coughing as I don’t think its a
good idea to eat honey all day

Yes please do SIM 21 in July, it’s my #1 favorite series ! Hope you feel better !

Awesome. Can’t wait for any of your novels. They are amazing and treasured. Take care of yourself!

I would love to see a SIM that focuses on a brief trip back to Earth for Emily to see what has transpired since she’s been gone and maybe some good ol retribution against her step-father before returning to the nameless world. Love this series!

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard February 23, 2020 at 8:42 pm #

I like to think that Emily’s disappearance led her mother into thinking that the step-father killed Emily.

In the course of the investigation of Emily’s disappearance (and of her step-father), plenty of reasons were found for the step-father belonging in prison and he gets sent to prison (where he gets killed).

Going alone with the above, Emily’s Mom goes clean and marries a good man. 😀

Looking forward to Ark Royal 15.

Focus on your health for as long as you need. I’m very excited to see a continuation of the SIM series as well as the Empire Corps, I know I’m an odd ball and I just haven’t been able to get into the Learning Experience series. Thank you for all of your amazing work.

Hope you get to feeling better soon. Looking forward to more sci fi.

How about another Inverse Shadows book?

  16. rwahrens February 24, 2020 at 12:06 am #

SIM anytime! It is beyond a doubt my all time favorite series! A majority of authors who do series (and that’s beginning to be a trend), work in one of two ways.

First is the traditional way, book following book. Most of them get two or sometimes (rarely) three books in before crashing into boredom. Chris has amazingly avoided that with SIM. Don’t know how, but keep doing it!

The second way is to write a book, then split it into four to six “books”, and publish each as part of the series. Gives nice continuity, but they are just so dang SHORT.

    Love, Love SIM.

What about circling back to Emily’s oath with the promise made to the Fae (fairies)? “Binding Oath” or “Debt of Honor”?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard February 24, 2020 at 3:57 am #

Oathkeeper refers to Emily’s oath to the fairies. 😉

  18. benbailey12373 February 24, 2020 at 3:28 am #

Love the SIM so glad to see plenty of that!

Regarding the cough, it has taken me years to find Fisherman’s Friends. I don’t know if they are available near you though, but their site does have the UK and Malaysia. I use the original.

While you’re taking medical advice from complete strangers … is your immune system still compromised? Be careful. Throat remedies tend to mask the problem, rather that fix it … I suggest going to an ENT specialist and have it looked at properly.

What’s with breaking into “a higher level of publishing”? We’re not good enough for you? You are the best genre-hopping novelist I have found!

  21. bret February 24, 2020 at 6:25 pm #

Yay for lots of SIM books!

  22. Warren The Ape February 24, 2020 at 7:37 pm #

Let me guess: “Oathkeeper” involves the fairies showing up to call in their chip, right?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard February 24, 2020 at 8:03 pm #

Well, Emily may receive a message telling “Keep Your Oath Right Now”. 😉

Seriously, Oathkeeper is where Emily has to fulfill her Oath to the fairies.

If you ask me, my thoughts are always: MORE SIM! :).
Sorry, maybe not the most origional, but it is still by far my most favorite of the worlds you created. I feel there are endless stories to be writen around Emily and this world. I hope you never fully end that series, even if you want to do other stuff and cannot keep up the current release frequency.

… I would also say: take us where your inspiration brings us: I rather wait longer on a new SIM story and read sonething else, then read a story that was forced or uninspired.
I will certainly buy and read your ‘new world’s’ first story as well.

  24. ananuri February 24, 2020 at 8:57 pm #

    First, get better, Chris
second, more SIM, please (yes, I know, not very original) – easily one of the best series out there (at least in my opinion)!

  25. Steve Clark February 24, 2020 at 10:43 pm #

I’ll drop you a line tonight. That being said, I’d love to see you do the sequel to “The King’s Man” some time this year. God bless and take care of your health!

  26. Jill February 25, 2020 at 9:01 pm #

I’m always happy to see a Schooled in Magic book or something in the Zero universe. I’d also like to put in a plug for a 5th Royal Sorceress book. Very eager to see Gwen’s continuing adventures!

Good luck with the sore throat and defeating that other annoying health issue!

  27. Kenneth February 26, 2020 at 1:40 pm #

Has the May date for the next Kat Falcone slipped, or has it already been turned in? Reason I ask is that I have a pre-order I placed with Amazon.

  28. Wyley Foster February 27, 2020 at 12:26 pm #

No quotes of Wax on, Wax off, they will not be tolerated, maybe use, Milk Cow, Poof, Magic Beans, then Emily blushes with a un-lady like sound from the rear.
For sore throat get Zink lounges, with acai berry and no more than four per day

  29. Bryce February 28, 2020 at 6:18 am #

Yes July should definitely be SiM 21 but I am a bit bias as that is the only one I have read.

  30. Mike March 2, 2020 at 6:58 pm #

When will you start the next book to there darkest hour?

    Thanks

    • Warren The Ape March 2, 2020 at 8:18 pm #

      +1

  31. Peter March 6, 2020 at 12:45 pm #

I’d really like to see a kingsman story ark. I really enjoyed the book and think it has real potential to develop into a standalone story.

  32. rbonini March 9, 2020 at 10:46 pm #

Any thoughts of returning to the Democracies Might/Right series?

    • chrishanger March 12, 2020 at 6:29 pm #

I’m not sure – it depends on other things.

      Chris
