OUT NOW – Little Witches (Schooled in Magic 21)!

23 Dec

Merry Christmas!

The Necromantic Wars are over, but the Allied Lands are unprepared for peace.  In the aftermath of the war, old grudges flare to life.  And, with the White Council scattered, it is only a matter of time before the fragile peace is shattered beyond repair.

In a desperate bid to save what they can, the Allied Lands plan to hold a conference at Laughter Academy.  But all is not well in the witches school.  The girls are growing increasingly reckless, increasingly out of hand, preying on the mundanes below the mountain school as their tutors plot and scheme to take advantage of the chaos.  And no one seems to know why.

Emily is in no condition to intervene.  But when Lady Barb, her former tutor, asks for her help, Emily cannot refuse.  Heading to Laughter, taking up a teaching position, Emily finds herself dragged into a world of schoolgirl games, staffroom politics and a deadly plot aimed at the heart of the Allied Lands themselves …

As a beta reader for Book 22 Right Side of History Chris litterally made me have an apoplexy of emotions to the point I immediately text my sister because I NEEDED someone to talk to lol.

As a fellow beta reader for The Right Side Of History, I think we need to be careful about posting Spoilers for it.

Oh, I’m looking forward to Book 23 (and Book 24). 😀

      • benbailey12373 December 28, 2020 at 5:52 pm #

Yes I completely agree about not posting spoilers – which I didn’t!

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard December 28, 2020 at 6:05 pm #

        Yep, you didn’t.

        But some have. 😦

      • benbailey12373 December 28, 2020 at 7:09 pm #

Is there like a private Beta forum or anything? I NEED to talk about Right Side of History lol

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard December 28, 2020 at 7:37 pm #

The closest one that I know about is on Baen’s Bar (Slush Comments conference).

Chris also posts the Chapters on Baen’s Bar (Slush Pile conference) and readers post comments in the Slush Comments conference.

And yes, I’d love to discuss it more as well. 😀

Warning there is a big cliffhanger and the end of Little Witches – so prepare yourself lol

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard December 23, 2020 at 7:20 pm #

      You mean a Chris-hanger! 😆

      • chrishanger December 25, 2020 at 11:53 am #

        Sorry …?

Book 22 is being finished now (Hopefully Sunday) and should be out in a month or two.

      • Jared December 25, 2020 at 2:02 pm #

        That is good news!

Has Emily ever considered that all governments eventually fall–and that, at various times in history, Empires have contributed a lot to civilization?? Alexander’s spread Greek learning; Rome and the Byzantine Empires lasted a thousand years. The British Empire gradually morphed into multiple stable democracies…maybe establishing an Empire isn’t a bad idea??

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard December 27, 2020 at 9:18 pm #

Yet Empires very often want to enforce the Status-Quo.

IE: They Frown on change. Look on how Imperial China viewed change.

The various advancements in technology & ways of thinking happened in Europe that while it had a linking language (Church Latin) and some over-all cultural ties lacked anybody powerful enough to “prevent changes”.

Of course, there’s also the Fact that Empire-Builders can destroy as many lives (or more) than they save by creating Empires.

      • Fahnir December 28, 2020 at 5:37 am #

China has brought more people out of poverty while embracing rapid change than any government in history–all while essentially a dictatorship under first Deng Xiaoping and now President Xi Jinping. The stability of ancient Rome allowed education, politics, arts and culture to flourish in ways that still influence us today. Alexander changed the ancient world…

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard December 28, 2020 at 3:25 pm #

Sir, there are plus and minuses concerning Empires or any other human creation.

Emily (actually Chris) sees the costs in human lives and in human freedoms involved in the Creation of an Empire.

Since I agree with Chris about this and doubt that I’ll change your mind, I see no reason to continue this topic.

  4. Jared December 23, 2020 at 9:00 pm #

Wow what a cliffhanger! Man that’s just mean lol I hope we don’t have to wait long for TRSH

    • Ethir Nandor December 26, 2020 at 3:34 pm #

It didn’t feel like a cliffhanger to me. More like a teaser for the next book.
I am glad the story itself was mostly completed: I hate 2-parters 🙂

      Really enjoyed this one.

This Christmas was pretty lonely due to Covid restrictions. But at least now I have a nice book to sit down and read. Thanks Chris, and merry Christmas!

Am I the only one that got confused about a couple of thing. First the Prologue how did the mages that went to the Blighted lands and claim a castle, then harness the nexus point there when Emily and Void were the only 2 that knew how to tame one.

Then the second when did this become the 21 book n the series and not TRSH as is pointed out in the last update on the books being written when?

    • Jared December 24, 2020 at 10:32 am #

There are other ways to tap a nexus then the way Emily and lord and master Whitehall did it. The other ways may not be as elegant as Whitehall but it’s been done.

TLW is the 21 novel in the series because Chris made a change. He decided there needed to be another book before TRSH.

I liked the book, but I hate the cliffhangers in general. It means that this only the half of the book, and we must have to wait several months to read the end of it.
That was what must be said, imho, but for the rest – keep up the good work, Chris!

  8. Dani December 25, 2020 at 4:56 pm #

Stronghold is the last school left that hasn’t had an Emily visitation. I don’t expect she’ll be invited there soon.

    • Thomas Tomiczek December 25, 2020 at 6:25 pm #

Yeah, that is sort of funny. And it is n”visitation” – by now she must hav a really crazy reputation for turning schools upside down.

    • chrishanger January 2, 2021 at 9:23 am #

I have an idea for a story set there, but – perhaps – not featuring Emily.

  9. Jason December 27, 2020 at 7:19 pm #

Thanks for the Christmas gift Chris!

  10. Dale Switzer December 29, 2020 at 1:52 am #

At the end of Infinite Regression Chris stated that he hated books whose authors promised a payoff that never occurs. So, all I can say is, thank God Chris is not George RR Martin. Thank you, Chris, for writing “The Right Side of History”.

On the “Empires have done good” debate above, it is easy to look back at any actions in the past, good and bad, that have resulted in good or bad things. We are not God and do not have the ability to determine the ultimate results of our actions. Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery and this resulted in the saving of the whole family. This does not make their kidnapping good. We can only judge our actions and our behaviors based upon whether those are actions are right or wrong in themselves. The ultimate results will have to be dealt with in their own time.

It is wrong to persecute innocent people. It is wrong to steal other’s freedoms and their wealth for our own pleasure. It is wrong to bully others in order to “make them stronger”.

Like Chris, I despise bullies. I didn’t go to a boarding school, but American public school taught me all I needed to know about bullies, I can only be glad that I could escape at the end of the day.

BTW, Chris, I would love to be a beta reader.
