Sounds great! I can’t wait for the artful apprentice.

So invested in SIM, sad to see it end. Why not have Emily divest herself of friends, etc., and explore that unknown part of the world. She has to be close to, if not in fact a lone power. No longer SIM, just Emily. A roving Paladin, armed with all manner of wisdom, high tech and a nuke. You raised this timid girl, trained her, challenged her. Why not show the woman

    Cast Adrift??

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 11, 2020 at 9:51 pm #

      Chris mentioned it earlier.

Earth had been conquered by an Alien Empire but the Alien Empire has freed Earth but now Earth faces problems from other Alien Species.

      • Bob January 11, 2020 at 9:55 pm #

        Yup..I remember now..thanx

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 11, 2020 at 9:54 pm #

Here’s the story idea (from a recent list of story ideas) for it.

      Quote

      Cast Adrift (Mil-SF, Trilogy)

Three hundred years ago, the aliens occupied Earth. The human race was enslaved, with humans serving as everything from basic workers to soldiers and spacers. But now, with an increasingly restive human population demanding independence (or at least equality), the alien overlords cut the human race loose. Earth is independent again, with other alien enemies sniffing around for potential targets …

      End Quote

Happy happy joy joy. I like this schedule

Marion Zimmer Bradley used to come back to her Darkover universe in new trilogies set in different times over and over again–Chris could do the the same with SIM’s world–a trilogy on what happened to Lord Whitehall and Bernard after founding Whitehall; a 2 book novel on Void’s early life and rise to power; a novel set in the final days of the empire; a trilogy returning to Emily 20 (or 100) years later; etc…Please don’t take away SIM! (It’s much cheaper than anti-depressants–kidding…)

    • someone January 12, 2020 at 5:49 pm #

I think we’ll get more about Void’s background (I suspect he’s brother to both Hasdrubal and Cloak) in TAA. I’m also inclined to think he’s Emily’s actual father, but that’s both wild speculation and a topic (her actual origin and bringing-over) we might not get back to until series end.

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 12, 2020 at 7:05 pm #

Chris has publicly ruled out the idea that Void is Emily’s father.

Chris does have reasons to keep Void a mystery but I hope that he’d consider showing Void’s earlier missions for the White Council.

Perhaps from the point of view of Void’s companions in those missions. 😀

      • Daniel January 13, 2020 at 1:36 am #

I feel like it’s been hinted at that he is the last of the 4 brothers. I do not think he is Emily’s biological father

  12. georgephillies January 12, 2020 at 9:20 pm #

    Cloak is Void?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 12, 2020 at 9:55 pm #

      Chris hasn’t publicly said.

  13. William Ameling January 12, 2020 at 11:29 pm #

Oath Keeper? Could that be the Oath/favor to (small and non nasty, that need protection against humans) Faerie all the way back in Book 1 in return for helping Emily and the others from the Martial Arts class get back to the School just before it got attacked? We will have to wait and see. (SIM fans have been wondering about it for a long time).

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 12, 2020 at 11:36 pm #

I don’t think that it is a Spoiler to say that “Oath Keeper” is the book where Emily is called upon to fulfill that Oath.

Now, it would be a spoiler to say what the fairie ask Emily to do. 😉

  14. George January 13, 2020 at 2:43 am #

I would like to ask if you have plans about returning to the barbarian at the gates universe at some point in the future? I really enjoyed that series and I would love to see the aftermath of the Federation’s Fall and it’s impact on the rest of the galaxy.

  15. PhilippeO January 13, 2020 at 4:53 am #

    Thank You.

I always love SIM and Zero.

  16. Guy Marc GAGNÉ January 13, 2020 at 3:11 pm #

I believe we may all be pleased that Chris now has a clean bill of health, continued close monitoring is sensible and necessary but, definitively heartening.
This state of affairs is resulting in enhanced productivity, for which all of his legion of fans will be grateful. The forecasted schedule of releases augures well for a return to his former unique voluminous level of creativity/writing.
I look forward to enjoying all that may be generated by this remarkable mind/individual.

Finally getting around to paying the butcher’s bill, with the Fair folk; this has been highly anticipated by one and all, particularly after observing the consequences of her former Headmaster’s deal with the ‘Devil’.
Void’s history and what not, I would wager, continues to tickle the curiosity of a great number of loyal readers.
Will the White Council’s interest/interference in Emily’s affairs lead to her adopting a Lone Power lifestyle following her apprenticing with one – will she return to her University – get embroiled in the politics of the Nameless World – set up shop as a purveyor of novelties and creative improvements for the greater benefit of one and all?

Fleshing out survival strategies and, plans for the reestablishment of the marines as a stabilising force in the future, based of scattered embedded/hidden assets, as well as low level recruitment and training would certainly an interesting course to chart. As we know some planning and foresight had gone on at the highest echelons of the Corps.

  17. William Ameling January 13, 2020 at 4:18 pm #

I think Emily has worried about what the Faerie would ask to redeem that Oath. I am sure that she will be glad to get it taken care of and behind her, as long as they do not ask for too much that conflicts with other needs and obligations. Open and Unsatisfied Magical Oaths can be very dangerous in that World, when you do not know what it take to satisfy it.

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 13, 2020 at 5:01 pm #

      Nod

We heard that the Grandmaster was going to talk with them about Emily’s Oath but never heard if he did (or was able to talk with them).

Thus we had (and Emily) had every reason to believe the Oath was still hanging over Emily.

  18. G January 13, 2020 at 10:10 pm #

Does anyone understand the difference between the fairie in the first Schooled in Magic and the giant, extra-dimensional Fairie in Mirror Image?? Also, is Chris still planning on writing The Price of Power? I didn’t see that book in the latest SIM book listing…

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 13, 2020 at 10:20 pm #

I call the one we saw in Mirror Image “Greater Fairie” which are native to the Void Between Worlds.

Nothing has been stated by Chris about their relationship with the Elves also mentioned in the First book but I suspect the Elves may have been “off-shoots” of the Greater Fairie. IE The Elves were “part” of the Greater Fairie used by the Greater Fairie in their interactions with the humans of the Nameless World.

I view the insect sized fairies as a natural feature of the High-Mana Nameless World.

      • SPINDOC January 14, 2020 at 10:18 am #

Pure speculation, I think Chris called the little faeries the Unseelie in the first book. If the Greater faerie is the Seelie faeries, I’d say oathkeeper would be to help the unseelie beat the seelie.

Artful Apprentice, sounds like the Dickens character… Wonder what mischief Master and Apprentice will get up to 🙂 Break into other magicians houses to steal notes would be one way of testing your power levels.

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 13, 2020 at 10:39 pm #

I think Chris is still planning on writing other SIM novels after Oathkeeper.

I lost the list of SIM planned titles after Oathkeeper but Price Of Power sounds like part of his Very Big Plot involving Emily that I know about but Chris would deliver a Fate Worse Than Death on me if I spoiled it. [Nervous Grin]

      • Rhino January 13, 2020 at 11:14 pm #

Well, thats encouraging. Nice to hope that Emily won’t be retired to the bookshelf to gather dust. Good insight there Drak. Besides, its illogical that Emily will limit herself to academia with so many necromancers existing and more developing all the time. The oath has to be resolved, been expecting it, but, Void as Cloak? Mischief beyond reason, he doesn’t need help to eliminate Emily. But as the last brother, hmm, thats a thought

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 13, 2020 at 11:25 pm #

Who says anything about “eliminating Emily”?

We know of one mysterious Sorcerer who seems to have plans for Emily.

What the plans are don’t apparently involve her death. After all, he knew she lost her powers. If he wanted to kill her, that would be the best time. 😈

      • Rhino January 14, 2020 at 1:13 am #

Good point, except that the White council isn’t exactly a fan club of Emily and Cloak sent old what’s her name to cause issues on multiple occasions several of which could have been the end of our heroine. Mainly expressing relief that Emily will continue to carry the standard. I’m happy the Nuttal mind is grinding on in the fantastic world he created

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 14, 2020 at 1:55 am #

        Cloak?

He hasn’t been mentioned since that one book. 😀

        ….

Oh, I know that you meant the Unnamed Sorcerer who is Nanette’s new Master. 😉

Sure, he sent Nanette on tasks that could have resulted in Emily’s death but he also forbid Nanette from killing the powerless Emily in Cursed.

So the evidence appears to be that he is planning to use Emily for some plan and IMO Nanette’s earlier tasks were more to test Emily than to kill Emily.

      • wazman1930 January 22, 2020 at 3:04 am #

Drak I thought he fitted you with that dreaded snirk collar just to prevent such a occurrence. Although you might need to replace the battery by now

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 22, 2020 at 3:09 am #

That’s “snerk collar” not “snirk collar”. 😉

And Chris has made me replace the Very Powerful Battery in it. 😀

  19. James Conklin January 14, 2020 at 12:22 pm #

Here is from last month: I intend to write Gennady’s Tale – a novella – next, for the Fantastic Schools anthology. After that, there will be The Artful Apprentice, Oathkeeper, The Right Side of History, The Face of the Enemy and Lone Power. That concludes the original planned arc. I do have ideas for future books, but we’ll see.

  20. William Ameling January 15, 2020 at 6:45 pm #

IIRC, those small (insect sized to use Paul’s wording) Faerie that Emily made her Oath to, were a hive mind type intelligence, that was a lot intelligent, and maybe more powerful magically, than the small individuals.

  21. Gary W Blievernicht January 16, 2020 at 12:31 am #

Impatient person that I am, when is “now” ? (or am I looking in the wrong places to find it?)

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 16, 2020 at 12:38 am #

Now for King’s Man is January but Chris & his family got hit by the flu bug, so he had to stop work on King’s Man.

Hopefully, he can restart writing it by next Monday.

I’ve been following the Chapters of King’s Man on Baen’s Bar, Slush Pile forum.

  22. William Ameling January 16, 2020 at 3:52 am #

I think that Void is Cloak, a member of the Magic Council that ruled Mountaintop and was located deep under it. NO One on the Council knew the real identity of Cloak, not even Aurelius, the Administrator of Mountaintop, who Emily ended up fighting against at the end of Book 5.

What is uncertain is if Void and/or Cloak is the one controlling Nanette, and is the one causing a lot of the trouble and coup attempts in the Kingdom of Zangaria, and who almost killed Alassa at her wedding.

I doubt this possibility, but can not rule it out completely.

“IF” Void is the one causing all of that trouble, then we will see a major life or death confrontation between Emily and Void when she learns that.

Another possibility is the Sorcerer that we (and Emily) learned about in Fists of Justice, when her ship was coming into port at Beneficence from Caleb’s Father. He was apparently very strong and lived in Zangaria before something went very wrong with a powerful spell he was trying to cast or develop, which could explain his continuing interest in trying to take over it (dating all the way back to Book 2 and the first coup attempt against King Randor)

    • G January 23, 2020 at 10:21 am #

I think Cloak is Void, and he was attempting to separate Emily from her “attachments” to Zangaria as he believes powerful sorcerers should avoid involvements in individual countries…

      • Jared January 23, 2020 at 6:44 pm #

I agree more is he has been pushing her development as well.

  23. William Ameling January 16, 2020 at 3:55 am #

The missing brother of the dead Grand Master of Whitehall, is another possibility.

    • Chris January 16, 2020 at 7:04 am #

      Emily is Void?

  24. mrwizerd January 16, 2020 at 8:39 am #

Any release info for Mirror Image Audible?

  25. Greg Hastings January 16, 2020 at 4:50 pm #

    What happened to Kat?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 16, 2020 at 5:10 pm #

Kat (of Angel In The Whirlwind) returns in another trilogy starting in May.

      • Kenneth Dick January 19, 2020 at 6:24 am #

Still somewhat confused about Kat series. Could have sworn I read in your Upcoming that you planned one before this one? Don’t see it any longer, though I seem to recall the title was something like “Debt of War”.

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 19, 2020 at 8:26 am #

Debt Of Honor will be followed by Debt Of Loyalty and finally Debt Of War.

The Kat books are published by a small publisher but Debt Of Honor had been delayed because major illness on Chris’s part. The same with Debt Of Loyalty.

The notice about Debt of War that you saw was about Chris writing it. Chris has completed it and it has been turned into the publisher.

  26. Mike Brooks January 18, 2020 at 2:53 am #

No “The King’s Man”. Zero…zip, nada. I thought it was “now” last week.

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard January 19, 2020 at 8:29 am #

Mike, this schedule is about When Chris is Writing these books.

He attempted to Start Writing “The King’s Man” last week but he and his family came down with the flu.

      • Gary W Blievernicht January 20, 2020 at 7:45 pm #

Oh. Apologies, I had thought they were estimated/predicted release dates.

  27. Bryce January 20, 2020 at 10:07 pm #

so what do you think the release dates of the SiM books.

  28. Secret Storyteller January 21, 2020 at 9:24 pm #

More SIM 😍 Cannot think of anything better, a great world to escape into in the evenings! Fantastic series and a fantastic author! Cannot remember how many times I’ve read these books 🙂
