14 Sep

It’s been an odd few weeks.

As you know, we spent six weeks in Malaysia, after a brief layover in Istanbul (very interesting city, with lots of history) before flying back to the UK so my son could return to school. This time, the jet lag was a real killer. I felt like I had chemo brain for a week, which is worrying as my last chemo treatments were actually eight months ago . However, I was able to complete The Family Pride and the first draft of Mirror Image while we were away and have nearly completed Favour The Bold once we returned and I recovered.

Mirror Image – as people keep asking – is currently going through its second edit, while waiting for a cover. I’m hoping to have it out in a few weeks, but I can’t guarantee anything yet.

The audio version of Cursed will go live on Oct. 8th, hopefully. Watch the blog, facebook page or MEWE.

My current plan for the next few months (he says, with some trepidation) is this:

-The Ancient Lie (The Unwritten Words 2)

-Their Last Full Measure (A Learning Experience 6)

-The Artful Apprentice (SIM19) or Debt of War (Kat 8)

-The King’s Man (Zero 7)

  • The Artful Apprentice (SIM19) or Debt of War (Kat 8)

Let me know what you’d like to see.

I’m still irked at losing Windows Live Writer – so far, every blog program I’ve worked with has been unsatisfactory. Doing it through wordpress itself is a headache – the formatting is a pain, the colour is hard to manage and the whole system is basically a reminder of why I hate replacing my computer, even if it was clearly reaching the end of its life.

Like to see The Artful Apprentice (SIM19)

Also a thought, when a new book is coming out I’m checking your web site daily for weeks. For those that want to participant, can you collect e-mails and as each new book is released, do a group e-mail?

      • chrishanger September 14, 2019 at 5:05 pm #

I do a mailing list, on my site (or you could just follow my blog.)

I agree his main problem with the SIM books is how to end them. I think the best idea is to end the books right after Emily finishs her Apprenticeship. then Chris can start a new series of books continuing the stories of the nameless world starting a few years later. with a few linked in flash back stories from other Points of View building up confusing misstory and magical complexity, leading up the a major shift in the story world. PS. yes Chris chalange or not, have fun and Enjoy the ride.

  2. SAS September 14, 2019 at 10:34 am #

Chris, try this link https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=8621 it should be Windows Live Writer, if not then you might get lucky using this http://web.archive.org/web/20170112124505/http://wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/C/1/B/C1BA42D6-6A50-4A4A-90E5-FA9347E9360C/en/wlsetup-all.exe it’s the archived setup for Live Writer (and the other Live apps).

And KAT please, listening to the 4 Audio versions at the moment.

Is perhaps Open Live Writer (openlivewriter.org) a suitable replacement? I have not used it, only heard of it as a possibility.

  4. bryanrfandrews September 14, 2019 at 10:58 am #

Debt of War please. I must try some other series of your books.

  7. Daniel September 14, 2019 at 11:53 am #

I like the listed plan. Artful apprentice is the top of my list however the whole list you put out are all books I’m eager for

Chris, you can also try to install “TinyMCE Advanced” plugin on your wordpress it’s highly configurable and looks pretty much like old MS Word when you choose to use the classic editor.

About your update, it’s sad, at least to me, that you’re giving low to zero priority to TEC series, in fact almost all your sci-fi series went to the bottom of the list or out of the list.

I remember some years ago you promised a 2nd book following the “Their Darkest Hour” and it was completely forgot.

As I consider you one of my favorite Sci-fi author it saddens me to see your change of focus but I understand that creativity is something complex and it seems that you shifted yours into the “Fantasy universe”.

Another up vote for SIM19. I’ve been missing Void in the recent books.

Weirdly, I’d never heard of Windows Live Writer. I’ve used BlogDeak, which might be slightly less WYSIWYG. I’d second the Open Live Writer comment above, though, since it’s an open source branch of the original Live Writer, specifically meant as a replacement.

Chris, I have mixed feelings (such as watching your mother-in-law drive over a cliff in your brand new car) ! I like Kat, but SIM is like a first love for me, so I go with SIM.

  11. Danna Micoletti September 14, 2019 at 2:25 pm #

Another vote for The Artful Apprentice. Schooled in Magic series is my fav.

  12. James Jeffery September 14, 2019 at 4:21 pm #

I think I’ve bought / read everything you’ve published. For me it’s SIM first and foremost. However, I’ll take what I can get. 😁

  13. ananuri September 14, 2019 at 7:14 pm #

SIM19 first, please. Emily is my favorite, the more of her, the better
All the best wishes to you

  14. Steve September 14, 2019 at 10:41 pm #

SIM for me please. One thing though you mention Debt of War (KAT8) but what happened to six and seven did I miss them?

I hope & trust that the little tyke’s return to school was somewhat less difficult than his dad’s jetlagged old self. You will come to appreciate the simplicity of these current circumstances as you: 1- age, 2- your child/children reach adolescence, 3- you still maintain that crazy schedule, etc.
Sorry, been there done that and all… LOL
No complaints about your audacious production plans but, truth be told, you would not be you were they not so!
The capricious nature of life, the trials and tribulations planted along one’s path, and how one choses to confront/cower them is revealing of the intestinal fortitude and overall grit that transform/evolve and define an individual. You have demonstrated steadfastness and courage, somewhat akin to one of your loftier heroic main characters, in the face of adversity and held your course. Therefore, there is little doubt in my mind that you shall meet and, dare I say surpass those great heights.
As always, stay safe and be well

Please write The Artful Apprentice (SIM 19)!! I love this series! I’m going to take a somewhat different tack than many others–I think book series tend to die natural deaths when authors run out of good stories (or sales plummet!) Emily and/or the nameless world has so many stories yet to tell you could write them for quite some time…the trick is to change time periods.

An example would be Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover series–she wrote at least a dozen series (and many collections of short stories) over her lifetime. For example, she wrote one series where the MC, a telepath named Regis Hastur, was a teenager (classic coming of age), another when he was in his thirties and struggling to deal with events threatening to destroy his world, a standalone novel set in yet a different time period, and several additional series where he was a supporting character in old age while other characters took the main character roles. Chris could do likewise…

Hi Chris. A big SIM fan so that always top but I am also a great fan of Kat and Zero as well as ALE so it looks great to me Keeping the pace up wow I do not know how you do it but I am in awe. Keep up the great writing and keep health. All the best to you and yours.

  20. BNejad September 16, 2019 at 11:23 am #

Their Last full measure please! Really enjoy all the series but been missing that one recently 🙂

p.s. What happened to Kat 6&7?

    Thanks 🙂

    • Xtriver September 19, 2019 at 3:53 am #

I was wondering the same. I knew there was a spin off after book 4, but I did not know anything about 6 or 7. I thought I had missed something, still can’t find them though.

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard September 19, 2019 at 4:44 am #

What happened was Chris’s medical problems.

The first two Kat books occurring after the victory were delayed because Chris wasn’t able to help edit them.

While he’s written a third “after the victory”, IIRC his publisher is delaying publication until the third has been edited.

        Hopefully, they’ll be out soon.

  21. Jason W Jorde September 16, 2019 at 3:20 pm #

Looking forward to The Artful Apprentice (SIM19)

  22. Jill September 16, 2019 at 8:06 pm #

    I vote for SIM 19.

Longer term when you have time and feel up to it, I’d really enjoy another book in The Royal Sorceress series. Looking forward to seeing how Gwen and her fiance are doing!

    SIM19! Love this series!

  26. Bradley September 18, 2019 at 3:06 pm #

I think you are getting to some really great Character development and Rising Action in the series. Everyone is anxiously awaiting more of the story. There are so many mysteries to be revealed in the coming books regarding the new College and Emily’s apprenticeship. Can’t wait to read more!

  27. Timothy Canning September 20, 2019 at 12:20 pm #
