Updates–The Family Pride, Mirror Image, The Empire’s Corps, Etc

31 Jul

Hi, everyone

The first piece of good news is that The Family Pride is up and it’s already got some good reviews. I’m currently mulling the next two-three books in the series – I’d like to do something with Bella, Cat’s other sister, but I haven’t figured out what. (Yet, anyway.) I do have one idea, but it would be a bit OOC for Bella – I may give it to Saline instead. I haven’t decided yet.

The second piece of good news is that I have completed the first draft of Mirror Image, Schooled in Magic 18, and it is now off to the editors. No cover or publication date yet, but watch this space.

The third piece of good news is that I have a short story in Tom Kratman’s (and Baen’s) Terra Nova: The Wars of Liberation collection. Doing Well By Doing Good is an idea Tom actually gave me (long story – he gave it to me a long time before the collection was more than a glint in his eye) and it seemed to fit, so I wrote it. The collection itself is currently available as an eARC and will be out properly in early August.

The final piece of good news is that the next project will be Favour The Bold, The Empire’s Corps 16, which will go back to the marines in the core worlds.

That said, my wife insists I need a holiday – and I probably do – so it will be around two weeks before I actually start writing. Watch this space …

As always, comments, reviews and shares are more than welcome.

Chris

    Yeah, take her advice.

Too bad Emily didn’t get the chance to take a vacation. 😈

True but I would like to think that there is at least one particular universe in the entirety of the multiverse where she is given a chance to unwind.

    Take care of yourself!

Can’t wait for Mirror Image and learning more about Void!!

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard July 31, 2019 at 4:45 am #

Learning “more about Void” is the next book.

Void doesn’t make an appearance in Mirror Image but he does sent for Emily at the end of Mirror Image. 😉

    Yes take a real break.
    Back to the empire good
Would The Artful Apprentice be next? As someone said learning more about void after 18 previous books is something I have been looking forward to.

Earlier Chris had said that The Artful Apprentice would follow Mirror Image and at the end of Mirror Image, Emily has heard from Void about starting her Apprenticeship.

Looking forward to all these books 🙂 I already got Family Pride but not read it yet as I am going through all the SIM books at the moment. Currently on Alasa’s Tale. As soon as I have finished reading them I will read Pride. Looking forward to it 🙂

Take the missus’s advise and have a well deserved holiday dude. You all have fun. 😀

May be nothing, but when I look at The Alchemist’s Apprentice (The Zero Enigma Book 5) on Amazon, the page has a section that says “Books In This Series (5 Books)” that shows books 1 – 5, and The Family Pride isn’t shown. When I look at The Family Pride on Amazon, it doesn’t have a “Books In This Series” section.

I don’t know if this is something you can fix, but just wanted to let you know in case you didn’t know.

It takes a few days for Amazon fully to link a new book up with the series. Chris has responded before about this issue. Just have to wait a bit.

Chris, your books have helped to keep me sane over these last few years, I think that you absolutely deserve a holiday. I look forward to seeing how the Empire Corps series progresses as well as the continuation of the SIM series but it can absolutely wait until you take some time for yourself and your family.

Eminently sound advice from your better half.
Not only is she a physician but, she knows you inside out!
Remember the old adage: ” Happy wife – happy life! ”’
Mulling things over at a more sedate pace cannot detract from achieving your ultimate goal.
It will only teach us, your loyal readership, to develop patience as a virtue!
    Be well and stay safe.

Maybe because I am currently about half way though #4 of SIM on a ferocious binge of the audio books, but I am wondering when Emily will no longer be flushing, and when a smile will reach the eyes.

      Hi Chris.

Are you going to finish The Promised Lie series? I just finished the first book and I’m hooked 😀

  14. William Ameling August 29, 2019 at 5:45 pm #

I was rereading parts of Book 4 and found a couple of items of interest (location 3498 of 6174 or about 57%). Emily was discussing Schools of Magic with Lady Barb, and asked how “How many other magical schools are there?”

Lady Bard responded Six or seven, in the Allied Lands. Whitehall is the best, naturally, with Mountaintop a close second. Laughter Academy was pure female and Stronghold was an oddity it takes only boys, but combines magical and non-magical children in most classes. (I thought we had been told of a few female students at Stronghold, possibly one of Caleb’s sisters was going to go there. In a later book of SIM we learned that Stronghold was 7 years instead of six years, which may have been revised from Chris’s original intent/plan.)

The other schools are quite small, with only a handful of students and teachers. More like homeschooling, but with several families sharing their resources to teach their children. (Perhaps with children staying at home instead of at the school.

So maybe their only students were from/in a small area such as a City like Beneficence. However, I think we have been told (elsewhere in SIM) that anyone can take the end of 4th year and of 6th year tests which are standardized and conducted by the White Council/Allied Lands, even if they were home schooled. With the test results recognized anywhere in the Allied Lands. Richer and more magically powerful students get sent to the formal schools, along with some scholar ship students like Imaiqah and Freida.

Then the item of particular interest: There used to be two more (schools of magic), but both of them were destroyed by the necromancers.

Obviously one of the two destroyed schools was Heart’s Eye. I wonder if we will ever find out anything else about the second destroyed school. I also wonder if the second destroyed school had a Nexus Point like Heart’s Eye did. Maybe something will come up about it in future Books. It is one of those loop holes that an author like Chris will leave for possible use in the future.

Chris: I was ecstatic when I saw Cursed appear because it suggested you are doing fairly well. I’m nearly 60, have read a gazillion books, and Schooled in Magic is one of my favorite series. OK, it was selfish, but I fretted that the last I might hear of Emily was that she had lost her magic. Keep up he great work after that R&R!

Any idea on when Mirror Image will be out?

  17. Carline Price December 18, 2019 at 5:25 am #

Hello I love the whole series❣️

Can you tell me when the Audible version be available. I do a lot of driving and love being able to listen while driving.
