Out Now–The Family Pride (The Zero Enigma VI)

26 Jul

Six years ago, in the aftermath of the House War that nearly tore Shallot apart, Akin Rubén and Caitlyn Aguirre were betrothed in a bid to keep their rival families from returning to war. Now, with both of them on the brink of maturity, that marriage is starting to loom. The moment of choice, when they must decide to go through with the wedding or risk their families resuming their rivalry, is fast approaching.

And yet, all is not well in House Rubén. Akin, the presumed Heir Primus, has many enemies, relatives who will do anything rather than see him succeed his father and link their families to their former rivals. Powerful factions are gathering, ready to oppose the match by any means necessary. Secrets from the past are being dug up and turned into weapons, just waiting to be launched. In desperation, Lord Rubén – Akin’s father – forces his son to enter the Challenge – a contest that will either prove his right to inherit or utterly destroy him.

But the Challenge is not quite what it seems …

Thank you, I just now got it to read, and I seem to be the first one to comment here. (I have been checking every day for it).

Since it comes up in this book, I have also wondered (before this Book) why Emily has not introduced the idea of microscopes and telescopes to her world. Maybe with Mirrors and Images being the subject of the next Schooled in Magic Book, Chris will have her introduce the ideas (they would be very useful for medicine as well as warfare).

Chris, why do you like so much the plots where thousands of people will suffer if one ugly forced marriage doesn’t take place? A society that works like that, be it a futuristic universe from your Hyperspace Trap or this one, medieval, is an evil society. A prostitutional monarchy, I’d call it; and IMHO it doesn’t deserve the sacrifices it demands.

Seems more like consensual arranged marriages rather than forced marriages. Nevertheless, such arranged marriages were fairly common in pre-20th century societies, so it would be a little a-historical to not consider that being the typical arrangement in a society as depicted in the SIM and Zero books, especially among the aristocracy and wealthy classes.

True—and these marriages are still more common than they should be. But —yeah, I guess I’d have to write something myself: something not only about having the balls to tell them to go stuff themselves with their “consensual arrangements” made by the fathers for their children, but also about the people who, for a change, are proud enough to find it revolting to prostitute their royalties, who are, after all, supposed to represent them.

In the days when governments literally were a family business and families ruled most lands, marriages often DID determine war or peace…

On an alternate note, will Emily take steps to prevent future schoolmasters of Heartseye from trying to lock her out of the wards ie. Whitehall and/or if she was a founder of Whitehall, can’t she at some point “dump” Gordian’s modifications to the wards of Whitehall and go back to the original primitive wards and then re-build them (similar to purging application software)??? It would be fun to read about Emily’s re-taking back of Whitehall’s wards–maybe when Gordian gets into trouble???
