Updates–Cursed, Health, Future

24 Feb

Hi, everyone

Bad news first – the chemotherapy hammered the cancer, but there are traces of it left and the doctor has prescribed radiotherapy. I have a pair of exploratory examinations on Friday – I think; they haven’t sent me the letters yet – and then it will start sometime shortly afterwards. I am so done with this … <groan>.

On the plus side, I’ve been working hard on Cursed (Schooled in Magic 17). I’m 31 chapters into the book and I’ve sketched out the plan for the remaining 9 chapters, so hopefully I should complete the first draft by Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are going to be very busy, but … I hope to get the edits done next week and then send the book to the publisher for the next set of edits and publication. I don’t know when it will be published yet, though.

I’ve also been sketching out ideas for Kingdom of Ghosts (Zero 6) and an (as yet unnamed) Zero book featuring Akin. I realised that I needed another POV character for the really big trilogy and Akin, for various reasons, is the logical person. OTOH, this means he needs an ‘origin’ story too and I’m not sure which way to go. A spy in the school? A plot against him by rogue elements within his family? Or something along those lines? I’m not sure where I want to take it, because he can’t be too old before the big trilogy begins. I did wonder about giving him a chance to set up an estate of his own, but that’s too close to The Family Shame.

And I’ve been sketching out notes for the next few Ark books. I have a rough plan to end the current campaign with the third and last Invincible book, but not the war itself. There will be more books following the war with the virus and its effects on the human universe … how does that sound?

My rough plan for the future is this:

March – The Right of the Line (Ark 14)

April – Debt of War (Kat Falcone 6)

May – Kingdom of Ghosts (Probably – or The King’s Man)

June – Their Last Full Measure (ALE 6)

July – The Ancient Lie

    Take Care Chris. 😀

Oh, I had a thought about another SIM short work for you to think about. It might be interesting to have a story set during the Faerie War.

While I am super excited to hear of all the progress on Cursed and your other works, I hope you dont wear yourself out too much trying to work. I understand it can be a great therapy for some and might be just what you need, so please dont take this as me thinking I know what is best for you; I just dont want you to put work before health. Im hoping you finish kicking this cancer’s ass, make a full recovery, and I can continue to enjoy your work (Schooled in Magic is one of my favorite series of all time) until you just get sick of writing them. Best of luck and never stop fighting!

Not sure where your radiation therapy will be on the body but I know one of the draw backs for everyone is fatigue itll hit you during week 2 most likely glad they got the cancer. I had to do radiation therapy because of trace amounts left of cancer too it’s fairly easy and only takes about 15 minutes a day you should have weekends off take care of yourself listen to your body rest when you need it and work when you have the energy. You got this!

All the best for the coming weeks. We need your speedy recovery.

Hey Chris. I’m praying for you and I hope you get well soon. I’m also praying for your wife as I’m sure she’s not loving all of this as well and often the surrounding family gets forgotten in bad times. Your plans for your next set of books sounds great. I found you through the Ark Royal series and I’m really excited to hear that you have plans to keep it going. However, as others have stated I’m more concerned with your health and I hope you are getting the rest that you need. Stay strong and get well soon.

  12. Kell February 24, 2019 at 9:21 pm #

    Don’t overwork yourself ok?

  13. Charles February 24, 2019 at 9:37 pm #

Keep strong Chris. just remember that while your brain is busy with plotlines, your body needs to rest now and again. Don’t feel guilty if you want to take a break or just take things easy. Your health will improve. The hardest bit is learning patience – ’cause you want it NOW !! Everyone will wait for their favourite story, just get well again.

To answer your question at the bottom: the schedule looks good..I’m so glad to see Learning Experience there (you know me !!!) and am also glad to see Kay back as well..
Take care and good luck as always…..
    Bob

I’m glad to hear the cancer’s mostly gone, and I hope that radiation therapy kills the last of it for good. If you’re not feeling well, don’t push yourself too hard.

I like the idea of the Akin story, but I’m going to put this out there, I still think the king would call his family and Cat’s family into the capitol city. Shallot is the next most important location in Tintagel aside of the capitol, in some ways it may even overshadow the capitol in importance, meaning that (as the prince and his conspirators recognized) it could easily be turned into a powerbase that would rival the throne. Add to this Akin and Cat are the two top, most powerful families in the city. Their House war may have wreaked havoc, but the king will likely see the unification of the two houses as a threat to his own power. Add to this, Cat is currently the only known Zero. That’s a lot of power out of his ability to control. The king, logically would want to keep them close where he can keep an eye on them. But, I’ve enjoyed everything you’ve written so far in the Zero and SIm universes so I’m always thirsty for more.I kind of like the idea of an inner-house coup attempt, if it’s not overdone by this point.

    • Ann February 24, 2019 at 11:43 pm #

The King may feel such or be advised such but they are still children under parental authority and still at school under teachers and masters. The other families in Shallot might also resist Cat leaving the city as while she is there there is a possibility for broken items to be repaired and new items to be acquired. So far just students and her captors got new items.

As for a Akin plot a rival family seeking to become dominant seems most likely.

Best wishes for a full recovery

What about a short novella about the former Grandmaster’s experiences and escape from the demons in the SIM universe…

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard February 28, 2019 at 11:22 pm #

Are you talking about his soul escaping the Demon that took his soul in exchange for releasing his students & leaving Whitehall?

      • G March 1, 2019 at 5:08 am #

Yes–of all the sorcerers ever taken by the demons, Grandmaster Hasdrubal would be uniquely qualified to study his environment, learn, and find useful information and an escape or loophole–which he could possibly pass to Emily before his soul passes to the afterworld…to quote Captain Kirk, I don’t believe in a no-win or no-escape scenario (Starfleet’s Kobayashi Maru test). (Although he’d still be dead.)

Overall very good progress on your health. Keeping you in my prayers for your radiation therapy. Hope all goes good. Work as you want, we’ll be very patient and wait as needed. Health and Family come FIRST.

Always sending light and love to you and your family.

  18. SP February 25, 2019 at 6:32 am #

Echoing everyone in wishing you a speedy recovery.

Started following you for the Ark Royal, Learning and Falcone series, but after trying Schooled, I’m hooked. Eagerly awaiting Cursed!

Young Chris … I hope you have access to full spectrum cannabis oil … it’s really batting sixes against cancer in Australia.

  20. C Michael Bravo February 25, 2019 at 9:06 pm #

    Damn,
Cancer is such a fucking pain, screw aids research as the majority of those that have it get it at their own immoralities.
All those funds should be invested in greater research into Cancer reduction.
Such cancer rates though are just more proof that humans did not just evolve naturally on Earth.
We are either a creation of combined genes here on Earth or descendants of refugees or colonists from the stars. The 1st just shows that mixing genes for a new creation leaves far to many DNA links that are problematic & the later shows that we were not adapted fully to the Earth itself compared to the Flora & Fauna evolving here.
Even unnatural evolution from possible extreme radiation events @ 11,600 years ago & others possibly every 12,000 years should have left natural fauna with some 10,000 problematic health standards as humans. Yet they are all very low in such problems compared to humans.

Well Chris, my prayers are with you. May you have a full restoration of your health soon.

  21. Daniel February 25, 2019 at 10:19 pm #

So Chris I just finished listening to the hyperspace trap and it occurs to me that the new world where the survivors crash could be a really interesting story to tell the story of how they set up a new colony with only what they have and how a new human civilization develops

    • chrishanger March 8, 2019 at 12:01 pm #

I might. No promises, but it is an idea i intend to develop.

      Chris

Please take care of yourself–if you have time, could you schedule Mirror image in the summer???

  26. Bryce February 28, 2019 at 9:19 am #

Well I know little about radiotherapy, so I do not know if it is worst then the treatment before. I

    • Bryce February 28, 2019 at 9:23 am #

Miss clicked. I hope ir is not as bad as what you have been going though, but I wish you did not have to go through it at all. I hope all works out and it does not affect you like the chemo did. Thanks for the update and try to stay well and positive.

  27. Bill Lehman February 28, 2019 at 1:27 pm #

I have added you to the prayer list at my church. There are many people on the prayer chain so many more prayers are coming your way. Get well& feel better. Looking forward to book 17. I also enjoyed the Bookworm & Royal Sorceress series.

  28. Malcolm Smith March 1, 2019 at 9:59 pm #

    Hi Chris,

Get well soon, I wish you all the best and don’t overdo it on the work front, you aren’t going through the Slaughterhouse training programme you know 🙂

  29. KPAYNE March 4, 2019 at 8:51 pm #

Hi – read thru Schooled in Magic as it stands in February. Have loved your series- my best friend went thru surgery and chemo and radiation 15 years ago – is now 70 and still active – so you can do this!

  30. David March 5, 2019 at 12:36 am #

I’m guessing cursed might be one of the best SiM books. Call it a hunch but it sounds like you and Emily are having parallels.

  31. Andy latham March 6, 2019 at 12:17 pm #

Get well soon Chris. Hope it all goes well and your on the way back to full health. Love the ark royal series, really looking forward to the next book. Future sounds interesting defo more books with that story line. The virus concept is really good and pretty bloody scarey. Take care fella.

  32. Willis McDonald March 6, 2019 at 3:15 pm #

Glad to hear your doing well, looking forward to many more books. One question in the Ark Royal series you follow the British Navy terms except you use the term Mr. XO instead of the term First officer or Number One which would be the correct term on a British ship, also the term should be XO not Mr. XO if you wish to use the American navy term for that position. Other than that I really enjoy the series plus your other books you’ve written, glad your so prolific and entertaining wish you a continued long and pleasant life.

  33. joseph beaufait March 21, 2019 at 8:31 pm #

Any updates on the publish date of cursed?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard March 22, 2019 at 5:14 pm #

Based on what Chris said today, his treatments may be making him unable to get Cursed ready for publication.

IE The treatments are tiring him out. 😦
