The Future of The Zero Enigma

The Alchemist Cover FOR WEB

First, The Alchemist’s Apprentice is starting the first set of edits now. Hopefully, I will be able to publish it by the end of the month.

I’ve got a handful of ambitious plans for the universe. First up is The King’s Man, a story about a young magician who joins the Kingsmen and finds himself battling a plot to bring his country crashing down. Then … well, I’m not sure. I have a plan for a story following a young sailor who sails to Hangchow and finds herself caught up in a civil war, as well as one following an older teacher who gets assigned to Jude’s (with a secret mission to catch a spy), and one following a young woman who wants to kill the sorcerer who murdered her family … (actually, I’m not sure if the last one would fit into the Zero Universe, but we will see.)

And then I have a grand plan for a crossover featuring Cat, Isabella, Rebecca (TAA) and the hero of The King’s Men. I’m still trying to decide how it should go and, more importantly, how it should be formatted. I wrote the first books in first-person, but it might be better – with multiple characters – to go for third. My basic idea is … there are a lot of ‘magic goes away’ plots, but what about a ‘magic gets more powerful’ plot? Cat and her friends – and enemies, etc – find themselves dealing with an incredible crisis and great secrets from the past. And war, ghosts and a lot of other things that happen when society starts to fray …

I’m not sure how many of the earlier books will be written first, however. I do need The King’s Men and perhaps the sailor book, but otherwise … we shall see. I may also need to separate out the Isabella side of the story from the others.

What do you think?

Chris

When you say magic gets more powerful do you mean just all together more potent to let sorcerers throw more powerful spells or they make more advanced spells and magic objects kinda like how you’d advance in technology?

I was wondering if “magic gets more powerful” means magicians having problems controlling their own spells/magic as well as “Wild Magic” invading civilized lands.

IE Most magic in civilized lands is under control of humans, but what happens when uncontrollable magic invades human territory. Sort of like the magic version of constant hurricanes happening.

Because I would like to see the advancement rout kinda because of what cat has discovered there’s an explosion in magical advancement like what was witnessed at the beginning of the atomic age just in magic.

I like your new ideas. I eagerly await your development of the plots and stories including the development of multiple of your characters

I hope you can develop the voyage to Hangchow storyline and look forward to reading The KIng’s Man. Good to hear you’re having more ideas about using the universe.

I like this a lot. Having a world where you can jump to different players is really nice. Plus a group of heros can be fun especially as they clash with each other

whatever you do, please don’t write multiple points of view. Third person voice in this situation I think might be best. Sounds interesting

I’m super excited for the alchemists apprentice! I hadn’t expected to like the last Zero book but I should have known better I guess. The cover looks fantastic. I’m one of those that do judge books by thier covers as well as having made a bit of an ameture study of them, and yours looks very visially appealing for an entry in its genre. It sets up a feeling of mystery and the font isn’t too difficult to read.

I have one minor quibble about the Zero series; it does drive me a little distracted that the books are all placed in sequential order when entries in the series are spin-offs. It sounds like I’ll have to stop my previous mental grumbling however, if you’re planning on trying them all together. I can hardly wait for the next zero book!

Yeah if you’re going to have multiple main protagonists I think first person is going to get real confusing real quick. With Isabella, maybe when things go sideways the rest of them wind up seeking shelter with her.

I’d also personally prefer avoiding multiple main protagonists – it makes it difficult to follow and keep interest. At worst, I lose interest entirely and stop reading – at best, I’d probably start skipping over chapters with characters I wasn’t interested in to get to characters I -was- interested in. It can be done well, but I don’t see it very often.

I’ll trust your judgement, though! SiM ended up pretty much being my favorite series for a reason. Do what you feel best. You’re the author here, not I 😛

Sounds workable to me. Should be worth reading. This will fit between pieces of Family Magic?

It’s so good to hear The Alchemist’s Apprentice will be published soon. I’m sure I can hang on for a few more weeks and re-read Kat Falcone 1-4 to keep me occupied. I like the sound of magic getting stronger, perhaps some rampaging wild magic runs amok in Shallot like a kind of magical natural disaster.

    Magic becomes more powerful…

Some brainstorming with another Christopher Nuttall fan, just ignore 🙂

Our world and society a few decades in the future. The solar system is leaving a region of space where a fifth force was suppressed for whatever reason. Slowly, very slowly this “magical force” becomes more powerful. People are not suddenly magicians, but for some of them wishes become true more often:
“If I had more money, I could buy…” And next her wallet is full of bank notes.
“I wish you were out of my life” Poof ! The guy disappears.

    Plot:
Actually the appearance of ALL physical forces is slowly changing, the electromagnetic force, the forces that make the sun shine, gravity, the magic is just a side effect. The sun is powering down, destined to become a red dwarf.

We follow a few scientists on the moon who discover this. But their claims are hard to believe for the rest of society. How can our science guys solve the problem, how can humanity be convinced or even saved ? One of the scientists also happens to be exceptionally gifted in this new magic, and thinks that magic is the clue.

In orbit around the moon a first interstellar space ship is in construction. The project is in the doldrums, money problems, technical problems. It’s just too expensive to finish and launch the ship…

Our scientists save the day. How ? They use magic. Magic to board the ship. Magic (and duct tape) to keep it together. Magic to make the propulsion more efficient. Ready to fly the ship to find a planet where at least part of humanity can survive.

I just finished The Family Shame and it was superb. I never dreamed what an outstanding twist this would be on the first three Zero Enigma books, which I loved. Whatever you do, don’t leave out Callum. I would love lots more on Isabella and her education and the Hall!

      Thank you!

There will be more with her soon, I hope.
