OUT NOW!

The Kingdom of Zangaria has fallen into civil war. On one side, King Randor and his forces, determined to impose his rule over the entire kingdom; on another, the noblemen who want to crush the king; on a third, Princess Alassa and the Levellers.

Caught in the middle, Emily must steer a course between her loyalty to her friend, her duty to people who put their faith in her and her fears for the future.
But King Randor has unleashed forces even he may be unable to control…

So good to see you “back in the saddle” and writing again. Hopefully you will continue progressing with your healing and recovery.

Will Emily ever rescue Grandmaster Hasdrubal?? He sacrificed his life and soul to save hers–doesn’t she owe him a debt??

Consequences have always been a big part of Christopher’s stories I very much doubt hasdrubal who made a deal with the demon will be seen again.

I suspect that the Demon is torturing the former Grand master with selective imagery of Emily struggling and the like. It knows how much he cared for her in particular

To me, Emily seems weaker and less competent as time goes on. For example, after her recovery from her duel with Master Grey, she had to constantly expend magic to avoid going insane. In this book, it seems like she’s completely depleted in seconds. And she seems far less prepared going into situations than I’d expect and she’s also caught by surprise a lot.

Other than that, I enjoyed the book.

I think the level of her opponents and challenges keep going up so she’s using more power, faster–this is the first book where Emily is out of Whitehall and fighting on equal terms against other adult magicians–and she’s often fighting 2 or 3 at a time on a level playing field i.e. no tricks or lucky breaks. I suspect in the next book in breaking the curse she’s going to end up at Heartseye, expand her powers again, and face more necromancers…

Well she is going 1-on-1 against a necromancer without any tricks or extra boosts to her magic. Even her mentors would be hard-pressed. By far the toughest battle she has ever faced.

Always glad to boost the signal for my friend Chris, especially as I helped edit this one! It’s a really fine novel, and you’ll love the slam-bang ending!

Spoiler (Mild) We already know that a magician that is pushed to her absolute limit on her power will be a lot stronger afterwards, assuming that she survives it (no death or burnout). So we know what means for Emily, she is going to be a lot stronger, if she recovers (and we know that she will, the question is how- see next book).

Did I miss something with the final battle? Where did the 2nd battery go?

(loc 5063) “she’d been pouring magic into a pair of batteries ever since the army had started to move.”

(loc 5122) “she scrambled into her carriage and started to collect her tools. The spell notations, the lone battery, the ward and valve and the snake-bracelet…”

And how did the battery break? (loc 5419) “a colossal force punch slam into Cat. He was picked up and thrown back, smashing the battery as he crashed into the antechamber”

    • Ryan November 12, 2018 at 4:05 pm #

She used one battery for the cancellation spell to counter Randor’s earthquake. She used another for the super-charged force punch. She’s created another for the fight with Randor at the end, but lost it almost immediately.

At the end of The Princess in the Tower, Void references Emily as a “senior magician” and says she shouldn’t be interfering in Zangaria…what makes Emily a “senior magician” and why should it bind her?? She only has the 4 year degree–same as Alassa and Imaiqah–she left Whitehall without graduating…and she never swore to obey the compact…

      • Malik Drako November 12, 2018 at 7:45 pm #

Maybe it’s a mistake? Loc 5063 is after Randor returns to the city, and I only see references to a single battery after that point

Thanks for this one, a little bit less attractive that the previous ones, but still good, hardly wait for the next one.
Thanks and take care of you.
