Slightly Better Updates

9 Oct

Hi, everyone

The good news (well, the first piece of good news) is that I had the second set of treatments last Friday and, so far, no serious ill-effects have materialised. I’ve therefore been able to return to writing, with the aim of completing Para Bellum before the third set of treatments on the 26th. I don’t have a due date yet because A) I might not meet that deadline and B) the editing will have to be more intensive because I had to leave the project for six weeks. I can handle leaving a project for a week, although I prefer to avoid it, but six weeks is a bit much.

The next bit of good news is that I managed to do the first set of edits for The Broken Throne; hopefully, I will get the second set of edits done within a week or two and it can be slated for publication ASAP.

I’m not sure what I want to do next. Should I go for The Alchemist’s Apprentice, which is Zero 5, or Family Magic, which is the homeschooled magic kids idea? What do you want?

Chris

    More Emily! 😉

Seriously, more Zero would be nice.

  3. Aileen Gillett October 9, 2018 at 4:02 pm #

I’m just glad to see you getting better! I’ve love the Zero series however I think maybe you picking what would work best for your health is the way to go. Don’t overdo it… 🙂

Good to hear you`re feeling better Chris. I`ve been a fan of yours since “Culture Shock” although I`ve not always enjoyed everything you have written, you have however written a coupe of my favorites. Empires corps and Schooled in magic comes to mind. I`ve read those to many times, both of those series have books in them that after reading them I`ve felt jubilant, on edge and that this was the stupidest book of stupid and I would never read the next one. I of course purchase the next one on release if not on preorder. The series I would like to see more of is actually not one of my favorites, however I thoroughly enjoyed every single on of the books in the series and the only fault I could find about them, is that I couldn`t find any. would you Chris please consider writing another Falcone book?

  5. Elodie October 9, 2018 at 4:40 pm #

Well I liked home schooled kids idea but uh you sure you shouldn’t be taking a break instead starting new projects and such 😐 seriously you got to be the hardest working author I’ve ever come across.

  6. Rhino October 9, 2018 at 5:23 pm #

Wishing you a speedy and definitive recovery. Next book? Which is the most popular? Reading the comments to your blog for a year or so, nothing seems to generate like SIM. For me, Falcone comes as a close 2nd with Arc Royale 3rd. However, if not a series continuation, there’s the 1st book of yours that drew me in to your world….A Life Less Ordinary. I suppose Emily is the follow-up, but maybe….

I would like more schooled in magic as well as zero books. I do have one writing observation that I have made though having listened to a number of your works. You might consider a global removal of the phrases “and yet” and “so hard”. Most of the time, these don’t really add anything and they become repetitive.

  8. David Land October 9, 2018 at 5:40 pm #

Glad to hear of your progress… I don’t think there is a bad choice for what to write next, but Zero 5 would be an interesting read… just one more comment on your health, please take care of yourself, we are thinking and praying for you…

  9. Greg October 9, 2018 at 5:41 pm #

First take care of yourself. Then, the next zero would be nice.

  10. James Jeffery October 9, 2018 at 6:17 pm #

Happy your treatment is going well 🙂 The Alchemists Apprentice sounds good. Best wishes for the future.

  11. John C Smith October 9, 2018 at 6:25 pm #

Most important thing is to get yourself back to full health. If you can fit in another book in the Zero series , that would be great.

  12. Linda Robinson October 9, 2018 at 6:43 pm #

I am so happy to hear the treatments are going well so far. Please only apply yourself to what works with your health and energy. All of your books have been a joy to read. If it takes longer to complete for now we promise to wait. Please, please focus on health and family. Prayers and good thoughts for your and yours.

The best stories for me so far has been when a characters actions have ramifications for the world. So homeschooling sounds very much like a fish in water. Small and missable.
With all that said, at this time with your family around you and strong in your mind it’s probably the best time to write about that kind of stuff. looking forward to another better update. ( from a non writer . At least in speach i get chance to rephrase if misunderstood)
ps hope the spell checker is working the whole thing looks underscored

So glad to hear you are feeling better. The aggressive nhls tend to be swiftly cured, so odds are in your favor. That said, I would suggest that you focus on your most lucrative, unfinished series, as these have the potential to provide income for your family for years to come. But people will stop buying unfinished series if the worst happens. Sorry if that’s too blunt, and I know it’s not my business. I’m giving my honest answer to the question that you asked. It seems to me that diverting your time and attention to starting yet another unfinished series is the wrong direction. Adding a standalone sequel to finished series makes more sense. But completing unfinished series seems like it should be the priority.

  15. Alan Taylor October 9, 2018 at 7:56 pm #

Excellent report Christopher!!!! If you have time please don’t forget ‘The Empire’s Corp’. There has to be some lost marines somewhere in the core worlds.

  16. Rex Wiederanders October 9, 2018 at 9:46 pm #

I hope you just do whatever the heck you want to do. Enjoy, and thank you for the excellent books.

  17. Bob October 9, 2018 at 10:33 pm #

Were it up to me, I’d prefer you work on another “Learning Experience” book..There will be more, right???please???

  18. Dani October 9, 2018 at 11:08 pm #

The preview of Alchemist’s Apprentice left me with a much better impression than the preview of Home Schooled Etc. Basically, it came down to likable vs unlikable characters. (At least at first encounter, but that’s what a preview grants.)

  19. Jeremy October 10, 2018 at 12:18 am #

Great to hear of your progress.id like to see more of ark royal series but I should really try your other books.all the best!

  20. Tricia M Cabrero October 10, 2018 at 12:35 am #

I hope you are recovering well. I vote book #5

  21. David Bennett October 10, 2018 at 1:53 am #

Glad there is progress on the health front, best wishes with that. As for books, I’m leaning slightly towards the Zero (great series) but the home schooled magic idea is a neat one too.

  22. thor2705 October 10, 2018 at 1:54 am #

Usually first round is the worst one, next rounds will be decent I can say. Take care, fast recovery.
    More Emily (SiM), pretty please.

  23. Gordon October 10, 2018 at 2:04 am #

Definitely do what is best for your health! But since you asked, I would vote for more Zero.

  24. Joce October 10, 2018 at 5:19 am #

More Zero or Emily please – Good to hear you’re responding to treatment

  25. Bryce October 10, 2018 at 5:28 am #

I am glad that you are feeling better but do not push yourself and all of a sudden feel rundown…We all understand you need to take time for yourself and family right now.

  26. Geri Palmer October 10, 2018 at 6:04 am #

    Zero 5 please!

  27. Mark Prothero October 10, 2018 at 12:30 pm #

Really glad you are feeling better Zero 5 for me but just glad its going well at the moment.

    • JFerengi October 10, 2018 at 1:52 pm #

How about working on Zero 5 first or Kay Falcone.

  28. Farwalker October 10, 2018 at 3:19 pm #

Write which ever story you would like to write. I will read it regardless. Take care of yourself first because the main thing is your health and your family. Best wishes and prayers.

  29. Kell Harris October 10, 2018 at 4:58 pm #

Family magic and then more SIM. But make sure you rest up.

  30. Brian October 10, 2018 at 5:43 pm #

I’m glad you’re getting to enjoy good news again. I love SIM; those books never seem long enough for me. I’m insatiable 🙂

  31. Arda October 10, 2018 at 7:04 pm #

Great to hear your feeling better and are able start writing again. I enjoy reading your schooled in magic and am happy to hear it’s almost ready to be published. In regards to your question: I would vote for the second option, family magic. Sending you healthy vibes:)

  32. Tim C. Taylor October 10, 2018 at 9:54 pm #

Very pleased to hear better news. Chris, I think you should write whatever you feel would be the most enjoyable project, because that will be the least stressful. Goodness knows you’ve earned taking the easier path for once. And don’t rush your writing… I’m still trying to keep up. 😉

  33. G October 11, 2018 at 5:48 am #

I enjoy all your novels, but with a serious illness I would focus on building your cash reserves by writing only your most popular and lucrative series…the other series can wait until you are better.

  34. Vaporus October 11, 2018 at 12:57 pm #

I’m mainly into SIM but with all the requests for Zero I may have to actually read them.

  35. Lance T Collier October 11, 2018 at 4:06 pm #

I endured R-CHOP back in ’11 and have been through two other rounds since then. Keep plugging and listen to your body. As I told a tired fellow survivor just yesterday – “If you don’t find your couch, your couch will find you.”

    God bless!

  36. Joe October 12, 2018 at 3:12 am #

I hope your health continues to improve. I would vote for zero.
    Watch out for your self.

  37. Sam October 12, 2018 at 4:05 am #

Please do the zero 5. Waiting so patiently…

  38. Benn Foster October 12, 2018 at 5:13 pm #

please continue either Zero 5 or another schooled in magic

  39. Juan Suros October 13, 2018 at 5:01 am #

    Zero 5 or more SIM!

  40. Mervyn Thomas October 13, 2018 at 9:24 am #

Write whatever you want, I’ll read it happily. But the most important thing is to focus on your health and your family.

I have had a successful career, I am chronically ill and have a limited life expectancy. The things I regret are not the projects I failed to deliver, but the time I didn’t spend with the people I love.

Don’t make my mistake. I say this in gratitude for the pleasure your writing has given me, especially when I have been in hospital.

  41. Jill October 13, 2018 at 8:24 pm #

I agree with Mervyn Thomas and others. As long as you feel well enough then write whatever you want. I’m sure we’ll enjoy it. Just make sure you and your family are the priority.

  42. George Phillies October 14, 2018 at 5:03 am #

Whichever seems likely to pile up money most effectively. The poster your artist did for your book publisher quoted an amazing number of SIM sales in a fairly short period, so perhaps that is a good place to stay.

  43. Tarun Elankath October 14, 2018 at 11:28 am #

Trust you are taking the time to get better. My vote goes for SIM.

  44. Wazman October 14, 2018 at 6:59 pm #

Chris I’m still praying for your recovery. Just out of curiosity do you have any plans for Emily to encounter another dragon or perhaps the same one she meet in the very beginning.

    • chrishanger October 14, 2018 at 9:18 pm #

Eventually, yes . But it will have to wait a while.

      Chris

      • G October 16, 2018 at 4:45 pm #

It’s hard for me to get into more than 1 or 2 series–you might want to finish up the ones you have going before starting any additional new ones…

  45. Aleisha October 15, 2018 at 2:30 am #

I’m glad to see you’re feeling a bit better, but don’t overdo it. I want to put my vote in for the Alchemist’s Apprentice because I liked the little sample you put out a while ago. I hope you continue in good health.

  46. Don October 15, 2018 at 8:20 pm #

My vote is for SIM. But it is the only one I’ve read. Which other series would you recommend. I love your style in SIM.
