A Very Bad Month

25 Sep

Hi everyone

The short version of the story is that I was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma after going for a private CT/MRI scan. The doctors prescribed a six-month R-CHOP treatment, thinking that I could go into hospital for each session and then go straight home. It didn’t work out that way. I collapsed during a chest x-ray, revealing the presence of a nasty chest infection as well as the lymphoma …

… Which meant I went straight into hospital for nearly a month, hence the lack of any updates or chapters.

I’ve got out of hospital now, but I’m feeling wretched. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get back to work, although I obviously want to get back to normal as quickly as possible.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all the people who emailed or PMed me, or who sent gifts and donations. I’ll try to answer each of those messages over the next few days, but right now I barely have the energy to do anything (a problem made worse by nasty side effects). But I’ll do my best.

Chris

    Oh, crap!

Worry not about the writing, concentrate on your health. Our entertainment needs can wait.

    Feel better soon!

Be sure to reward yourself for little victories. A Big Mac, a piece of chocolate, an Egg McMuffin, a slug of good scotch, it doesn’t matter what. As long as it is a reward to yourself.

Wow I’m sooo sorry. Your my favorite author and I’ve been reading ferociously since I was a kid so you have a lot of completion. I’ve really enjoyed your articles and been impressed with your speed and sheer work load. Even with new kids arriving and this illness your still letting fans and followers like me know what’s going on with your work. Please just take care of your health and relax I for one would rather you got your health back even if it meant I never got to read anouther word of my fav schooler in magic series.

  18. Wayne Dismukes September 25, 2018 at 5:37 pm #

Please concentrate on your health. If writing will make you feel better, then do it. There are no expectations or obligations to continue. Your only obligation is to yourself and your family. That said, please get well soon. I miss your books.

  19. John C Smith September 25, 2018 at 6:07 pm #

The stories can wait. The most important thing is tp get healthy for you and your family.

  20. Carl Hempel September 25, 2018 at 6:09 pm #

I have enjoyed your works for years, your novels have been a bright spot all through my time in college and now for the last 5 years since I’ve graduated – thank you sir!

As someone who also went through a life threatening illness 2 years ago, my one regret about recovery was that I did not take more time to rest and recover, but jumped back into a busy schedule way too quickly. Rest friend, and don’t worry about writing just yet. 🙂

  21. Alan Baldwin September 25, 2018 at 6:21 pm #

From myself and my family, who love your books, take time for yourself to heal. Your readers are willing to wait because it just makes the next chapter better.

    Take care.

  22. dkhoyi September 25, 2018 at 7:12 pm #

Please take care of yourself first, no need to worry/stress about anything else.

Hello Christopher, Glad to hear you are starting treatment. My father survived non-hodgkins lymphoma and the treatments and side affects are no walk in the park. Please know we are all keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. Just focus on getting better and your family. Don’t worry about anything else.

  25. Charles September 25, 2018 at 8:25 pm #

Don’t bother trying to reply to people. Everyone will be thinking of you at this time and not expecting you to tire yourself out. Just concentrate on getting better and don’t try and rush back into things. Listen to your body – and your wife !!

  26. Russell Murdoch September 25, 2018 at 8:49 pm #

Your first priority is getting yourself stronger and better. We all love your writing but we can all wait until you are better. Focus your energies on getting better and know that everyone is thinking about you and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Chris our wishes are with you and the family during this time. Get well & get healthy first 🙂
At the very least you have amassed more experiences that can all be written about in the SIM series.

And no worries about the gap in writing. I follow kristen Britain and the green rider series and that’s been 5 books over 17 years 🙂

    Kind regards
    Michael Holzapfel

    • RKB September 26, 2018 at 2:21 pm #

I can beat you on that one. I’ve been waiting for the 5th Chtorr book by David Gerrold since 1992. So 26 years. 🙂

      • MarkR September 27, 2018 at 5:34 pm #

Blimey, it’s bad enough waiting for Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller Chronicles Book 3. 26 years is a serious delay.

Chris – hope you get well soon and please take the time to stay well – no rushing back too early – so that we can enjoy your writing for many more years.

  33. Dan September 25, 2018 at 10:33 pm #

Can’t wait till you feel up to writing again I really want to see how your newest installment of schooled in magic ends. Get well soon.

Chris, R-CHOP is brutal but effective. It was my treatment. You should be well after the courses. Do not worry about your writing but your health. Attitude is everything brother.

    • David Graf September 27, 2018 at 1:48 pm #

Don – You can donate via PayPal on Chris’s site. Here’s the link: http://www.chrishanger.net/cookiejar.html. You can use credit or debit cards. If you want to get there the long way, you can go to the first page of Chris’ blog and click on the Cookie Jar item on the right side. Hope that helps.

  40. Peter Norman September 26, 2018 at 2:51 am #

Chris, my favourite author, take care of yourself. Please. Your readers can wait. Now you need to look after yourself.
If you decide to cross the pond for a second opinion let me know. I pass gas but I do know our lymphoma dudes and dudettes from the IRB.

  45. Bryce September 26, 2018 at 10:12 am #

In my opinion I would use all the energy you have and get well. Your health is the most important thing you have, I know as I have a lung problem that has made me disabled. So I am not worried about the books until you are healthy.

  46. Mervyn Thomas September 26, 2018 at 10:26 am #

Please rest. Bugger your readers, concentrate on your family. (That’s bugger in the Australian sense).

I was worried it was something like that. At least you now know what you are dealing with. My thoughts and best wishes are with you. Don’t worry about the books, they aren’t as important as your health.

  52. David Graf September 27, 2018 at 1:49 pm #

We’ll keep on praying for you.

  56. JFerengi September 28, 2018 at 12:50 am #

Chris, you have undergone a terrible ordeal. Please concentrate on your recovery and do not worry about about your books. Those will come with time. I hope that your infection has been controlled since I believe that caused most of your discomfort. Everyone is praying for you. Ask someone to let us know of your condition so you do not have to do it.

  57. Wazman September 28, 2018 at 2:12 am #

Chris I’m still sending good thoughts and prayers your way. You can beat this!!!!!

  58. John Hunter September 28, 2018 at 10:34 am #

Ahh Chris thats rubbish news. Im sure you’ve had plenty of advice about rest and clean living and focussing on positive. I hesitate to add to the list but don’t forget to do the things that give you joy. Other Authors have used writing which they love as a visualisation tool – David Gemmell famously wrote Legend on that basis. Good luck and don’t forget to find some Joy!

  59. John Marko III September 28, 2018 at 2:29 pm #

God bless both you and your family, Chris. Make sure you take the time you need to just be with your friends and family, work can wait.

  60. Anarchymedes September 29, 2018 at 2:40 am #

Good to hear from you, mate. I mean it. And tell you what? When you recover–and recover you will–use the whole business to your advantage. As a fiction writer, you’re getting some no-nonsense real-life experiences right now. I don’t just mean the uncertainty about the future and physical suffering (although that, too, is more than many great writers have any personal idea about: for example, have your role model Heinlein been through anything close to what you’re going through right now?) But what I mean is the reaction of the people around you, both what they show to you, and what your emotional intelligence tells you they don’t show. I mean the emails and comments you get, from all over the world, written by people from various backgrounds, faiths, and walks of life. I mean the desire to just screw your eyes shut, clench your fists, grit your teeth, and fight that illness to the death with sheer willpower. Here is your fantasy story: learning magic may be more than just a school kid’s struggle for the peer respect. And now imagine a scientist whose loved one goes through something like that, raised to the power of ten, but his employer’s ‘business interests leed in a different direction’ or the Government political/religious/social agenda ‘dictates a different course.’ And perhaps only some underground genius, otherwise regarded as disreputable, is willing to give it a shot–or the treatment may only be available in a country that doesn’t welcome foreigners, or some such. Here’s you sci-fi actioner. And when you finish it, you’ll be surprised at how incomparably stronger it will be, compared to your earlier work: because now it’s personal; it’s no longer just a conjecture.
Once again, best of luck with your recovery.

  61. provinciallady September 29, 2018 at 3:10 pm #

I am so sorry to read of your serious illness. My closest friend has a disease that is very aggressive and the treatments have quite nasty side effects, so I can closely relate to this. His has been in remission before and they are doing something new to put it in remission again, and that is what I hope for you. I discovered you only within the past two years. Your books delight me and I am so appreciative of your gifts to us. I especially love The Zero Enigma and Schooled in Magic series–simply cannot thank you enough. Get well soon!!! Wishing you my very best.

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been so ill and have gotten such an unpleasant diagnosis. I’m glad that you acted to get the private screening and are aggressively fighting it. I hope you’re feeling better soon and good luck eradicating the lymphoma. Don’t worry about the writing. Focus on getting better and enjoying your family.

  64. Michael Brooks September 30, 2018 at 4:45 am #

    Hey
Even if it can play a part of resuming your every day life, writing can wait and so can we, especially given how prolific you are! Focus on getting better and enjoying moments with your family. Unfortunately no magic can help you there so you’ll have to rely on the docs to work theirs. I’m sure they will and you’ll soon be back on your feet. The best of luck to you!
