Updates …

21 May

Hi, everyone

As I may have mentioned a few times, I have plans for three more stand-alone books set in The Zero Enigma universe: the alchemist’s apprentice, the sailor’s story, the soldier’s story (and perhaps a fourth story, focused on the Kingsmen; they do more than just arrive too late to save the day <grin>). Depending on how well The Family Shame does, and it is doing ok so far, I’m planning to write them over the next few months. If I do, can I then have a big crisis-crossover … or should I simply stick to Cat for the next big trilogy?

Thoughts are, of course, welcome.

For the moment, the planned schedule is this:

June – The Long-Range War (Learning Experience 5)

July – The Broken Throne (SIM 16)

August – Para Bellum (Invincible 2, Ark 13)

Sept – Homeschooled Magic Kids (stand-alone, needs better title (Family Magic?))

Oct – The Alchemist’s Apprentice (Zero Spin-Off 2)

Nov – The Ancient Lie (The Unwritten Words 2)

Dec – The Pen and the Sword (The Empire’s Corps 15)

Obviously, this is not set in stone <grin>

Wonderful – but I don’t know how you do them so fast and so well.

Some where I read a story where the idea of something set in stone was countered with the idea that stone could be broken. 😀

My 2 cents on the “crisis crossover” –

Depends on what you mean. If you mean a large narrative that incorporates the various characters and has them interact that seems like fun. I’d especially enjoy the interactions between Cat and Callam + Isabella. There’s a lot to unpack there.

On the other hand if you mean a crossover with another author/world I would decline. While I am sure there are people who would enjoy that and no doubt authors that can make it work, I personally dislike those type of stories. Perhaps my perception is stained by too many bad fan fictions, but I just cannot take that type of work seriously.

    • chrishanger May 23, 2018 at 3:00 pm #

It would be focused on my characters, all intreracting.

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 23, 2018 at 3:44 pm #

One question about “cross-overs”. Are you talking about “story universe cross-overs”?

IE Characters from SIM, Royal Sorceress, Zero universe, Bookworm all interacting?

That might be very “interesting” to do correctly. 😀

      • chrishanger June 5, 2018 at 2:08 pm #

No, just characters from the same universe interacting.

    Definitely more Cat please.

  5. Derek May 21, 2018 at 6:41 pm #

Only one new SIM book this year? While I enjoy your other books, that’s a bit of sad news. 😢

    • Robert Howden May 21, 2018 at 7:14 pm #

Need another SIM book this year.

      • Torben Jensen May 22, 2018 at 3:57 pm #

I second the notion; hopefully it will focus on Void.

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 22, 2018 at 4:06 pm #

IMO any prequel story about Void will have to be from another person’s POV.

Chris doesn’t want Void’s backstory to be revealed before Emily learns of it.

And based on Chris’s plans that’s a few books away. 😉

A possible prequel story about Void could be from the perspective of one of his failed apprentices. It would be interesting point of view considering that in the supposed future Emily will be one of the select few to call Void Master.

        +1 for more SIM

      • thor2705 May 27, 2018 at 1:05 pm #

Yes, at least another one. Please, more SIM

    • tommalufe May 30, 2018 at 2:41 pm #

Yeah, I almost wish he would cut down on the number of series he is working on and focus more on his 2 or 3 most popular ones. Most authors that I see don’t have more than 2 series going on at a time.

      • chrishanger June 5, 2018 at 2:08 pm #

It also keeps me relatively fresh.

Looking forward to the Learning Experience and Empires Corps books.

  7. Daniel May 21, 2018 at 7:34 pm #

As to cross cross over. Sure why not. Thought might be more fun for them to show up in Cats books. Very very happy about long range war.

  8. P May 21, 2018 at 8:24 pm #

    1) More SIM
    2) Cross-over would be fun for Zero. To be honest I wasn’t excited about the family shame going into it, but it came out way better than I thought.

      Thank you!

Please say that on the review

  9. Bob May 21, 2018 at 10:00 pm #

    Learning experience #6 perhaps??

  10. Don Williams May 21, 2018 at 10:41 pm #

When are you planning to do the follow on to Their Darkest Hour, loved the first book been waiting for the second with eager anticipation

  11. Jensebaum May 21, 2018 at 11:37 pm #

Is this a writing, or a publication schedule?

More SIM please! Only one book for the rest of the year is really not much 😦

Crossover could be fun, as long as Cat is one of the points of view. Really wanna know what happens to her some years later.

Also, I’d like another Royal Sorceress book, something that gives the series a satisfying ending.

  12. G May 22, 2018 at 12:38 am #

I would be careful you don’t overextend yourself and commit to too many series at once…I would prefer to finish one series, before reading another…

  13. gbarbay00 May 22, 2018 at 2:07 am #

If crisis crossover means tying together all the standalone Zero books into an epic arc, that would be great.

    More SIM is always good.

  14. Geri Palmer May 22, 2018 at 2:42 am #

SIM and Zero, please! The Family Shame was actually becoming most interesting as the story ended; I would like to have seen Isabella in charge of the estate – took a long time to get her there. And SIM is always my first choice.

  15. Francis May 22, 2018 at 6:49 am #

    Missing the Empire Corps 🙂

  16. Randall Berger May 22, 2018 at 11:58 am #

Please … Focus on Cat in the Zero books …

  17. Maggie May 22, 2018 at 6:31 pm #

Royal Sorceress Please. This is your best fantasy work…..

  18. george May 22, 2018 at 8:14 pm #

Please, more SIM is always good
for zero universe, Cat should be there, probably
    thanks for excellent books

When will to second book to there darkest hour be coming out, I’ve read the 1st one 3 times now in preparation for the next one

  20. Big Ben May 24, 2018 at 1:21 am #

While I enjoy all your books, I agree with an earlier comment ….
I too would like one series to be finished before you move on to another. I looked at your tentative schedule for the rest of the year and it looks like you publish about a book a month (which is awesome, dude!) but they’re each in a different series.
I am another fellow waiting for the conclusion (or continuation) to the Royal Sorceress series, which began back in 2012.
SIM is fantastic, but it’s grown so large that I find myself forgetting events and even characters from earlier books. I’m not one of those fellows who goes back and rereads a series from book one every time the newest installment comes out – there’s too much wonderful stuff being published to spend time rereading everything. My “to be read” list is already several years long and growing all the time.
I suppose I could wait until you put the final period to a series, then buy them all at once and binge.

That said, a crossover featuring Emily and Cat?… Oh hell yeah!

    • G May 26, 2018 at 4:26 am #

I actually get confused going back and forth between SIM and the Zero universe, as it seems the rules of magic are different…Emily needs to be mentally tougher in the new arc–she’s been to war multiple times, fought and killed multiple people–she should have some ruthlessness, even some mental scarring from past battles…in book 15 she comes across as still a schoolgirl, not a battle hardened powerful sorceress…

As a reader I’m delighted to see so many books coming out, but I’m a little concerned for your health. You might burn out. That said, I’m one of your readers that just clicks the buy button now, and I have yet to be disappointed in any of your series that I follow. As for the Zero Series, I love Cat and her friends and am eagerly awaiting thier next adventure, but on the other hand, that snippet of the Alchemists apprentice really intrigued me. I think if you’re planning on having a time-skip in the adventures of Cat and Company and not directly picking up where you left off in book 3, you should do the alchemis apprentice story and maybe one of the others (I like the kingsmen’s idea as opposed to the soldier one) as spin-offs, and then dive back into the second trilogy because it would make sense narratively to do it that way. But anything you decide is fine… slow down a little bit maybe though, I’m still catching up!

  22. Mark Prothero May 26, 2018 at 2:53 pm #

Well for my twp pence worth I really liked the Family Shame book and would like a sequel but I also want more Kat Falcone books and more SIM books. I liked the Learning Experience books but not as much. I am not really reading the others at present. I will read anything Cat based though I loved the Zero books.

Can’t wait for the next Empire’s Corps book. I love the series and keep wanting more, please keep it coming!

  24. Sam Smith May 30, 2018 at 9:16 pm #

More Schooled in Magic, Angel in the Whirlwind, Zero Universe please

  25. Bob June 5, 2018 at 9:15 pm #

Is there no pre-order for “The Long-Range War”?? I looked Ll over Kindle and could not find a thing.. Thanx, Bob

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard June 5, 2018 at 9:40 pm #

Well, Chris hasn’t started writing it yet. 😈

      • Bob June 5, 2018 at 11:56 pm #

I guess that explains the lack of a pre-order.. But the above update from 21 May shows a June release date…hmmmmm

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard June 6, 2018 at 3:20 am #

IMO The June Date was when he’d start writing it.

And unless he changes his mind, it is the next book on his writing schedule.

    • chrishanger June 18, 2018 at 8:03 am #

      Not yet, sorry.

  26. Candy July 1, 2018 at 6:07 am #

    • Bob July 1, 2018 at 10:18 am #

    • chrishanger July 16, 2018 at 12:23 pm #
