Quick Updates and Thoughts

16 May

Hi, everyone

Good news first – The Family Shame was published yesterday, so if you’re interested in a whole new aspect of the Zero Enigma please check out the blog post. Comments and reviews are always welcome.

The Family Shame Cover Revised

I’m currently roughly halfway through The Embers of War (yes, I know; provisional title), although a combination of ill health, family commitments and an upcoming convention have slowed me down a little. However, after that …

… Well, I’m torn.

Part of me wants to do The Long-Range War, which is Book V of A Learning Experience, but the other part of me wants to do the homeschooled magic kids idea. Basically, the kids would discover they have magic, that their father’s a magician … and that what they don’t know about their family might well get them killed.

Which one would you like to see?

Chris

Chris, I’d like you to do both (of course), but I think book 5 of A Learning eperience is my preference.

    Cheers

    Alan
PS – Already bought The Family Shame.

Not to sound ungrateful, you are working hard, but any chance of additional titles to The Empire’s Corps any time this year?

  3. Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 16, 2018 at 4:37 pm #

    Broken Throne (SIM 16). 😉

    • Jensebaum May 16, 2018 at 5:24 pm #

      I second that!
If given a choice between Learning Experience and the homeschooled thing, I’d prefer the latter.

The home schooling one sounds fun to me. I hope you are feeling better now.

    Learning Experience next

  6. Billy May 16, 2018 at 5:51 pm #

You may have to get a writing team together.

Just talk into a recorder all day

Then have a team of writers/editors turn that into books

Then we can buy them as fast as they come out 🙂

    One new book every day

    🙂

    maybe 2

Chris- I’d love another ‘Learning Experience’ book first.

  11. Robert Howden May 16, 2018 at 8:01 pm #

    Home-schooled magic please.

  12. Jared May 16, 2018 at 8:02 pm #

I would like to see what happens in Book 5 of a learning experience. I’ve been running different scenarios through my mind about what could happen. LOL

  13. G May 16, 2018 at 9:09 pm #

homeschooled magic or finish the second part of your current SIM story–you left us hanging!

  14. Bill May 16, 2018 at 9:19 pm #

Not a fan of any of the Magic stuff… so anything but that 🙂

  15. Richard Parks May 16, 2018 at 10:10 pm #

    Learning Experience, .Please.

  16. Stuart the Viking May 16, 2018 at 10:56 pm #

Since you asked, I’d like to see what you come up with for homeschooled. I remember having fun thinking about what I would do with that idea when you talked about it before.

really want the next schooled in magic . . . Cliffhangers are evil man

Chris, could I give you one piece of feedback? You’ve had Emily grow up and move into the adult world in SIM, and she’s overcome a lot of hang-ups, but you still have her personality like a teenager. After years of martial magic and battles, when she fights she should be far more ruthless–you have her still using 2nd year prank spells to win…Similarly, Cat is now a fully trained combat sorcerer–when Lady Mathilda is temporarily incapacitated he should be killing her with a spell, or if her shields are still intact, a knife thrust or twisting her neck–not laughing and running off…left alive, she’s a permanent enemy and will kill him, Emily, their friends or allies in the future…no well-trained warrior would have left her alive and free.

personally I would like A Broken Kingdom….but if not that the one about the kids sounds interesting.

    • Ann May 17, 2018 at 2:09 am #

      Long Range War please.

  20. Stephen May 17, 2018 at 2:10 am #

I think its time for the Long Range War as that series has been left hanging tto long.

  21. Jill May 17, 2018 at 10:49 pm #

Of these options, I’d favor the home-schooled magic kids. That sounds intriguing. May I also offer a plug for another book in the Royal Sorceress series? I’m very eager to see how Gwen’s introduction of her Son of Liberty fiance to Britain will go.

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 17, 2018 at 11:53 pm #

      Chuckle Chuckle

Yep, the “old men” of Britain wanted another Master Sorcerer (male variety) to replace Gwen.

Now there’s another Master Sorcerer (male variety) available but he’s an American and a Son of Liberty.

I think Chris should mention that some of the “old men” had heart-attacks on learning about him.

Oh, the fact that him and Gwen are getting married would be second-place to the fact that their “hoped for Male Master Sorcerer” is an American Son of Liberty. 😀

It’s on the list of things to do

I would like to see long range war. but I was wondering why you cut off the possibility of trans-human intelligence in book 4 long road home, you have cyborgs and uploaded humans though they more or less glossed over or deemed as escapism, you also have space marines instead of the using war bots and maybe a commander. it seem you are caught in the realm of sci-fi troups

    • chrishanger May 20, 2018 at 8:07 pm #

I think it will happen, in that setting. It will just take time.

      Chris

Most definitely the homeschooled magic book, is this in the SIM Universe or other? I would really enjoy a spin off or standalone book set in the same universe.

  24. Sanjay May 18, 2018 at 11:54 am #

I would like the conclusion of the second part of SIM, the Broken Throne.

    • chrishanger May 20, 2018 at 8:11 pm #

It will come – I’ll probably write it in July.

      Chris

    Go for magic kids!!!!

  26. Barb Caffrey May 19, 2018 at 8:54 am #

I want the homeschooled kids, please. 🙂 In addition to everything else you have on the table (of which there is many). 😉

  27. Joe May 19, 2018 at 7:14 pm #

I just finished Family Shame and enjoyed it much more than I thought would. If you force me to pick between the two, I chose the home school. And put it in the SIM world.

Broken Thorne would be even better! ☺ i hope that the health issues work out.

    • Joe May 19, 2018 at 7:21 pm #

Oh, another Unwritten Words book would be nice😀😀

    • chrishanger May 20, 2018 at 8:13 pm #

Thank you! Please say that on the review

      Chris

I would prefer the fantasy series over sci fi, especially from you. It seems to me that you think more outside the box when you write fantasy than when you write sci fi. But I’ve only read a few of your sci fi novels, so I don’t know for sure.

  29. Tern May 20, 2018 at 5:53 am #

Would very much like another Empire’s Corps book. Or five.

  30. Bill May 21, 2018 at 5:39 am #

I vote for Empire Corps book, please.

I’m cautiously interested in the homeschooled magic kids concept. I’m not sure where you’ll go with it but a focus on the homeschooling, rather than the magic, could make for an interesting twist, and add the odd complication. Might the government try to remove the kids from their parents custody for failure to send them to an approved institution? Sure it’s not ignorance that might get them killed, but there might be a lot of extra things to play with in your story. I’ve a couple of friends from the homeschooling side of things but am not especially familiar with the ins and outs of the life. A little research could offer a tonne of fascinating complications for magicians not yet in training.

    • chrishanger May 23, 2018 at 2:59 pm #

That’s an interesting thought. Do you know anyone who might be willing to talk to me about it?

      Chris

Broken Throne would be my preference but I love the Kat books. I am not sure I would start another new series at the moment as there are a lot of these at present from the authors I read and I have several that I have not started as yet.

  33. gbarbay00 May 22, 2018 at 1:50 am #

Home schooled magic would be my pick.

  34. JFerengi May 28, 2018 at 8:03 pm #

Isabella grew up quickly in only one year as she went through H*ll. She now has a home and is in control of her own future. I really liked the Family Shame. I hope you will let her contact Cat s school if she can convince Callum it would be worthwhile to learn how to forge.

  35. Calerdine August 22, 2019 at 1:14 pm #

    Kat is my favorite
