The Royal Navy never expected to fight a full-scale interstellar war. Everyone knew the Great Powers would never risk everything on armed conflict, when there was plenty of room for everyone in outer space. But when a hostile alien force stumbles across humanity’s handful of colony worlds, the Great Powers must set aside their differences and fight to preserve humanity from utter destruction.

Desperate for starships and manpower, the Royal Navy embarks upon an ambitious plan of converting freighters into makeshift carriers and recruiting reservists and criminals to fill the ranks. Classed as expendable, the small carriers will be given the most dangerous missions to slow a remorseless alien foe …

… And the pardons their crews have been offered will be meaningless if they die.

Great book but there’s no table of contents in my Kindle edition.

I normally leave them out. They tend to cause problems for conversion.

        Er, no.

I’ve just checked 17 of your books and 14 do have a ToC so I’d argue that you normally include it, at least for the SF which I’ve been buying (and a good thing too as I like the note at the bottom of my screen saying the time to the end of the chapter).

As you don’t use DRM I suppose I could go in and add a ToC if I want to, but I prefer the lazy course of asking you to do so.

I suspect that Chris is talking about the Conversion to “Kindle Format” when he puts them up.

Some of his books are via Small Publishers (as opposed to him self-publishing them) and the Small Publisher can include the TOC easier than Chris can.

I have little problem adding a TOC for the indie books that lack them.

I think you mean the published (small press books), rather than the indie books. I know a handful of indies do have TOCs, but they’re in the minority.

Really, I’m trying to keep things simple for anyone who wants to convert the file.
