More Updates …

2 Aug

Hi, everyone

I spent the last few hours today inserting all the edits, fixing plot holes, etc for The Gordian Knot. (Much credit to my beta-readers, who pointed out everything from continuity glitches to authorial stupidity.) The current planned publication date is October 15th, but I’m hopeful that we’ll get a cover and the editing done sooner. We shall see.

My planned writing schedule hasn’t really changed. I’m going to write The Zero Curse next, barring accidents. This will be followed by Graduation Day (SIM14) and The Cruel Stars (Ark 11). For various reasons, my post-December schedule is impossible to predict at the moment.

Zero Cursed Cover Revised FOR WEB

That said, I have been working on several ideas for new stories and universes:

One is basically a spin-off from the Zero universe, a stand-alone set in the lower levels of society. I have a workable plot, I think. I just have to write it.

Another is pretty much an odd heist story, set in an alternate French Revolution (provisional title – The Unkindest Cut). There may be some elements of magic involved – or a background where magic existed, even if it doesn’t now – which keeps it from being a straight alternate history or historical novel. It’s something that I’ve been mulling over for a while. But really … I’m having problems sorting out the magic, if there is magic.

Another is a story where someone from an alternate world contacts ours – and buys weapons, hires mercenaries (etc) to overthrow a despot. Or something along those lines – I have the first section planned in my head, but I’m not sure how it will actually develop.

And then there’s an urban fantasy story where magic was revealed ten years ago, leading to a major crisis … well, I can’t say much about it yet. But it will be complex and involve little romance.

I’ve actually had fewer SF ideas and concepts over the past couple of months. I do have a plan for a fourth Ark Royal trilogy, but so far I haven’t been able to flesh it out that much. I also have a time travel story that is probably too close to the ‘carrier goes back in time’ story unless I find a way to put a new take on it. And while I have been working on the ‘Social War’ storyline, it isn’t solid yet.

And I also need to start solidifying books 5+6 of A Learning Experience and book 15 of The Empire’s Corps.

Which ones would you like to see?

On the “I want to see list” is learning experience 5,6

The carrier goes back in time style while a trope can be fun but not for a full series. Maybe a standalone or trilogy.

The alternate hires our merc not to thrilled about.
Urban magic exists and the world now knows. Maybe

    • georgephillies August 2, 2017 at 11:45 pm #

Consider :the carrier goes back in time”. It sails into Scapa Flow on April 1, 2018. The Captain and crew know that their most important activity is the Holy War against Technodeism. They will do anything to strengthen the UK in preparation for this war. As history has no importance, they have almost no historical data, and are surprised to learn that the European Union and the United States of Mexico are not the same thing.

  2. Bob August 2, 2017 at 2:20 pm #

Most definitely want to see the “A Learning Experience” keep going, and soon.. Please don’t put it off to next year..Am still waiting to see what happened to Steve Stuart and his wife(I forget her name, sorry) after they’ve left to go exploring..

  3. clbeam August 2, 2017 at 3:31 pm #

Like sim and learning experience your military sf series are in a flood market well there good there are other I would like to see if sufficiently advance magic will it merge with sim they both have keva magic and the inverse shadow

  4. An Marie August 2, 2017 at 4:07 pm #

oh gosh, I thought the Gordian Knot was going to be sooner. Do you think Graduation Day will be out by the end of the year? When do you think the next ZE (the zero curse) will be available? and by the way I hope your cover artist is fixing her hands, they are kind of strange. As for your questions, I would read the stand alone in the ZE world, but not the rest. I am very burned on on UF and SF right now, maybe in a few years I will go back to one or the other.

Have you considered writing some of Void’s back story? considering the huge interest in him based on the comments whenever you post anything about Emily I think there would be a lot of interest, of course that might have to wait until the end of SIM depending on what is really going on with him 🙂

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard August 2, 2017 at 4:14 pm #

I think Chris has some surprises in store for Emily concerning Void.

Giving Void’s back story now might ruin the surprises. 😉

      • FarWalker August 2, 2017 at 5:04 pm #

I think void is the most interesting character in the series. I would definitely like to see more about void whether it’s in the form of a surprise as Paul suggests or a true backstory per An Marie’s comment or both.

      • G August 6, 2017 at 1:24 am #

I wonder whether we’ll ever find out what happened to Master Wolf?? His notes popping up in Benificience indicate he (or his knowledge) traveled beyond Whitehall after Emily left that time period…could he be somehow linked to Void (his master’s master’s master?)??

    • Pyo August 2, 2017 at 4:41 pm #

Can’t unsee those hands now – are they male hands tagged on a female model or something?

Personally from those small expositions I’m not sure what I’d be most interested in. Maybe the UF one, if it’s got a female protagonist and doesn’t do the usual romance rubbish.

    • Amanda M August 3, 2017 at 11:00 pm #

SIM is my favorite, and I also would love to read something with Void. Maybe not even a back story, but one of the jobs the council sends him to do. It could be a (#).5 type of thing where it’s really short but it leads into something that happens in the next book but you don’t really want to put the story of one of the main books.

      • An Marie August 4, 2017 at 7:19 pm #

I like Amanda’s idea! I think Chris commented once upon a time that he regretted only writing from Emily’s POV as he wasn’t able to show other people’s reaction to Emily so writing a few .5 books/short stories/novellas he could include some of those ideas he had and could fill the voracious interest in Void 🙂

  5. steven house August 2, 2017 at 4:48 pm #

As a big SIM fan i hope The Gordian Knot could be sooner like yesterday, but…
as for the book ideas thay suggest an interesting multiverse where some realitys suffered some form of a null magic event or had the magic drained into another reality (Ark Royal and The Empire’s Corps vs an alien race that may or may not be manavors) and just because Emily cannot go strate back to our Earth without help perhaps she could get to a version of Earth and then fom there find her version of Earth hideing her identity on The Empire’s Corps Earth easy a dead world??? back hear we don’t need to know who girl was that stoped or rearanged the merc’s plans. (crazy fan theory)

  6. Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard August 2, 2017 at 4:53 pm #

I’d like to see another take on “magic” known to exist in “our world”.

  7. allyk August 2, 2017 at 5:46 pm #

I like the alternate world mercs. Typically the such groups are caught unprepared with no way back (like Emily). Having time to prepare and being able to get resupply/reinforcement would be a different take. What would the level of governmental involvement be? Would it be kept secret from governments or would the mission be government sponsored? It’s hard to imagine the government being aware and letting a private group just run off and do whatever.

    • steven house August 2, 2017 at 5:51 pm #

governmental involvement why? only a someone crazy would try to regulate magic

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard August 2, 2017 at 6:11 pm #

“Government Involvement” in the sense of “who is hiring those mercenaries and what are the mercenaries up to”.

Governments are very likely to want to keep an eye on mercenary activities.

IE Are their actions going to impact our interests in foreign countries? Are their actions going to cause major problems for us (will we be blamed for their actions).

    • allyk August 3, 2017 at 5:56 am #

Also the question of is it small teams like Stargate or full-out industrial might like Weber’s Multiverse series

      Just so long as you don’t make it like Gate (http://www.crunchyroll.com/gate/episode-1-the-self-defense-force-goes-to-another-world-682113) . . . . .

  8. AJ August 2, 2017 at 9:22 pm #

I hope to see more of SIM magic after Emily’s graduation. Lots to learn about hearts eye and how the nexus points affect the earth around them, what about the other continents… There is so much more for us to discover and learn going forward with the SIM series.

    • Ann August 3, 2017 at 2:33 am #

The invasion of humans into the world, Founding of the ‘Whitehall’ Castle. The Faerie War, The Necro war.Lots of stories before Emily arrives.
There was speculation that the castle was built into a rune shape but it is possible that the castle was grown rather than built. When conditions are right crystals self assemble and soil becomes rock so with nexus energy perhaps 1-5 people used magic to convert the nexus surroundings into a hall and rune castle. Buildings are normally held together by electromagnetic forces but if the particles that make up the castle are also bonded by magic then by magic they can be rearrainged easily and would strongly resist other magic..

Only Chris knows if the castle was built by hundreds of people (indirectly and directly) using manpower or by 1-5 people using thoughtful magic and the nexus magical energy. I know I like the magic option.

  9. Big Ben August 2, 2017 at 10:25 pm #

I just finished the Angel in the Whirlwind series.
There’s plenty of room to expand into the hinted at second arc. The issues of too-rapid growth and severe cultural clashes. What do the other human societies think of the new galactic military superpower? Will Kat accept the offered promotion or strike out on her own? Is the King under the (malign) influence of the foreign princess?
Chris, you write too much good stuff. I want more of everything!

  10. Arti August 2, 2017 at 10:35 pm #

Have you considered doing a magic story in the Litrpg genre?

    • chrishanger August 18, 2017 at 5:56 pm #

I’m not sure what form it would take.

      Chris

  11. Bradley August 2, 2017 at 10:57 pm #

You obviously have to do what you enjoy, but I personally don’t like to be involved in too many series at once, so I would like to just see you continue all of the hard work on the series you have.

  12. Charles Isabel August 2, 2017 at 11:41 pm #

SIM is my favorite series, my biggest complaint is the speed of the books coming to paperback. The Zero Series is good, I’d like her to get some magic.

As for Ark Royal, bring Susan back for another trilogy. Don’t kill her you bloodthirsty beast!

  13. Lindsay August 3, 2017 at 12:57 am #

I would like to see all of them Chris! However Empires Corps would be my choice for first up. 🙂

  14. Clayton Dennis August 3, 2017 at 4:09 am #

    Empire’s Corps and Ark Royal.

  15. David August 3, 2017 at 6:07 am #

Empire’s Corps and the new Angel in the Whirlwind series.

  16. Simon August 3, 2017 at 9:33 pm #

What would be interesting would be to see Empire’s Corps and Angel in the Whirlwind both covering the development and integration of all the new systems. Would also be a bit of 2 birds with one stone but with enough differences due to the political and economic variations to not be the same book. And more SIM and Zero afterwards. I’d hesitate to start a new series but if you have a well developed standalone or a short trilogy that won’t take up too much time and your needing something different whilst the other plots mature then go ahead with it.

  17. georgephillies August 3, 2017 at 10:55 pm #

The amusing thought is that Gordian screws up and sends Emily back in time, again, this time until before Whitehall castle existed. She gets to summon the castle as a perfect form, and then install the manufacturer cheat codes in the Nexus point, these being one level above “original owner”, so that having vanished she walks into the room and deals with Gordian and his wardmasters.

    • Ann August 4, 2017 at 1:19 am #

OK but before she comes back she needs to prepare the castle system for the Faeries (were they invaders from elsewhere or returning to a place they previously were before humans came) War.

While there was little ‘new’ magic in whitehall’s time there could be during the time of Empire and the Faeries had different magics. Another useful thing would be to develop the necromancy ritual with a secret backdoor that allows Emily to remotely shut down all necromancers across the world.

  18. Ihas August 4, 2017 at 12:58 am #

I think it’s great that you actually correct your continuity issues. As a beta reader for Warren Hately, I pointed out a few of those resulting from an alternate reality travel type scenario. His response? Something like, if your super hero travels to alt realities, and you don’t wind up with continuity errors, you’re not doing right. Yeah, something like that. 😒

    • chrishanger August 18, 2017 at 5:57 pm #

      It did work for Discworld

More seriously, it’s just something authors have to do.

      Chris

  19. G August 4, 2017 at 1:14 am #

I hope you show Emily developing into a more ruthless, powerful, and aggressive character given her enemies are now actively targeting herself and those she cares for…

October, groan and wheez! It consistently amazes me that I am mesmerized by a magical teen girl. I’m 65, retired military and normally read Sandford, Child, Silva and Baldacci. None of those guys have created such a logical alternate world of magic – I am captured by your wordsmithing (is that a word?). To wait so long for the next installment of SIM is depressing. I want to know about the faerie obligation, Void’s apprenticeship offer, Emily’s next necromancer and Heart’s Eye. And, like most Americans, I want it now. I have read all your other stuff, and its all terrific but there’s only one Emily that can lob a nuke. If you do publish something else first, I’ll read it – gladly. With SIM, you have created an understandable, creditable and logical system of magic. Equal to or better than Farseer Trilogy/Robin Hobb and Mistborne/B. Sanderson. If you gotta do something else besides SIM, be careful since all Mimics are not accounted for. Side note: the next person to utter “ouch” will be responsible for my nausea.

  21. Anarchymedes August 4, 2017 at 4:27 pm #

‘Another is a story where someone from an alternate world contacts ours – and buys weapons, hires mercenaries (etc) to overthrow a despot.’
It’s called Guns of Avalon, Amber Chronicles, book 2, written by Roger Zelazny in 1972. These series pulled me out if depression more times than I care to admit, and no offence to anyone, but I’m yet to read a modern author whose 120,000-word ebook will pack anywhere near as much emotional punch as this 70,000-word classics of the genre.

  22. Ihas August 4, 2017 at 8:16 pm #

A question for anyone who knows: How many books are planned in the SIM series and the ZB series? The ZB series looks interesting, but I’d like to wait until it is nearly complete before I dive in. From what I’ve read, there are a lot more books planned for SIM, and I’m not sure if there is a planned ending or if it will go on until Chris pulls a Robert Jordan on us. I sure hope there is a planned ending.

    • chrishanger August 18, 2017 at 5:59 pm #

SIM is currently pegged at 21, although that may change. Zero is pegged at 3, though there may be a spin-off at some point.

      Chris

  23. elkwood August 5, 2017 at 11:31 pm #

I believe Chris has mentioned 21 books for SIM. No idea on the ZB series

  24. Wazman August 6, 2017 at 3:55 am #

As a stand alone to the SIM universe. It would be interesting to see a story/trilogy about a young child of a merchant family that develops magic (first in their family like Imaiqah) and is sent off to one of the magical schools. In contrast to Emily’s step father and drunkard of a mother the child could have loving parents. That only want to give to their gifted child a chance to excel. But with the rift that exists between the magical and mundane societies it would near constant struggle to keep the family united.

A spin off could give Chris the ability to describe or have more content about the Nameless world that could be out of place for the current SIM storyline but still helpful as a whole.

    • chrishanger August 18, 2017 at 6:03 pm #

It would be interesting. I’ve added it to the list.

      Chris

  25. Bryce August 6, 2017 at 11:09 am #

I would like to see a Emily/Void showdown with Natalee(Lynn)/and he master major magical fight. We still do not know who he/she is all we know is he is very powerful and maybe on par with Void. Also for a cross over I thought Bookworm was the same world as SIM but thousands of years later. There seemed to be to many similarities in the worlds for them to be different but maybe that was just be, did anyone else get that feeling?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard August 6, 2017 at 1:32 pm #

The idea that the SIM world is the same world as the Bookworm world has come up before.

Chris has stated that they aren’t the same world. 😉

  26. Ihas August 8, 2017 at 8:30 pm #

Does anyone know how to pronounce Imaiqah and Shadye? I’ve been pronouncing them Micah and Shade Eye.

    • FarWalker August 9, 2017 at 3:45 pm #

I’ve been pronouncing them Eyemicah and Shadyeye. 🤔

      • allyk August 10, 2017 at 1:10 am #

I’ve been doing ih-my-kwah and shuh-dye (although the latter is probably simply ‘shade’)

      • FarWalker August 10, 2017 at 1:38 pm #

We could listen to the audio version and see how the professional reader pronounces the names. But honestly I usually read right through them when I’m not sure how to pronounce names or places. I am more interested in the story than the details.

  27. rbonini August 8, 2017 at 10:47 pm #

    Hi Chris

Any idea when Democracy’s Price might come out?
