Brief Update (Sorry)

22 Apr

Hi, everyone

I’m currently 19 chapters into Wolf’s Bane, Book 14 of The Empire’s Corps. If all goes well, I hope to have it uploaded and ready for purchase in a couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy it <grin>

The bad news is that I’ve pretty much decided that it will be the last book focusing on the Avalon Marines, at least for the moment. I need to go back to the Core Worlds and spend some time – and books – exploring what’s happened there, with Belinda, Glen and ex-Prince Roland. And the Commonwealth needs a rest too.

After that, I’m going to be working on Becalmed, which is a stand-alone spin-off of Angel in the Whirlwind. It’s something I’ve been meaning to explore and … well, it fits neatly into that universe. (And it provides a break between the two planed Kat Falcone story arcs.) After that, there will be the first stand-alone book in the Ark Royal universe – The Longest Day, which will tell the story of the Battle of Earth.

I’ve been tossing around a few ideas for later stories. I’ve been considering a return to the Imperium Universe, largely focused on the eventual and probably inevitable civil war. I’ve also been messing around with a spin-off, either for SIM or The Zero Blessing universe. I’m not sure, yet, which universe would take it better.

Is Becalmed the “lobster pot” story?

    Sounds interesting if so. 😀

Oh, I’m interested in seeing what ex-Prince Roland is up to. 😉

Chris, this is definitely NOT bad news, on the contrary, excellent news. Thank you.

I dare to say that, in my opinion, you should have alternate Avalon stories with some of the stories of the core worlds after the fall and even the marines that escaped from the fall. or do it from now on. It will be a pity to change the focus of the main story that has been the Marines exile in Avalon from the beginning.

If I remember correctly, you answered one of my comments, a couple of years ago and said that in the future the Stalkers and the others Marines were going to rejoin. Instead of changing the main focus of the series from Avalon to the core worlds, why not simply alternate the books.

Anyway, thank you for the excellent news.

  3. Daniel April 22, 2017 at 4:47 pm #

Seeing what’s going on in the core is a good idea. Avalon needs a decade or 2 of stability to solidify as a major interstellar power.
The SIM world is ripe for spinoffs and gives a chance for minor or new chars to shine and fill in details we don’t see with Emily. After all you are building up to the eventual hit war with the necromancers.
The imperil universe not sure I care too much about.
The angel in a whirlwind universe is also an excellent place to expand

Any updates on fist of justice?

It should be out in a month or so. The first editor is currently working on it.

You could tell the story of lady barb and void teaming up to spy on dua Kampala, while simultaneously telling the story of their first mission together. In my head it’s like a busy cop movie, one is a no nonsense hard assume the other is a wacky all powerful and along jerk. (This post started out as a joke but. Now I’m convinced it’s a good idea.

      • Wazman April 22, 2017 at 11:47 pm #

A Lady Barb and Void prequel would most definitely will be on my reading list. It would give us a chance to see more of the Nameless World that otherwise would be constrained by having Emily in the picture.

      • merr49 April 25, 2017 at 1:17 am #

Bad idea void is suposed to be the shady figure in the backgroud a spinoff would reveal to much besides im half convinced he is the villain.

      • Max Million April 27, 2017 at 4:17 am #

A story about times during the faeie rule and whitehall or other magic schools, something from the ‘lost’ continent, a story in the white city, many, many possibilities.

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 27, 2017 at 4:32 am #

I suspect that the Lost Continent will be coming up in the main series so Chris may not want to do a “side story” about it.

Mind you, I’d love to see more about Lord Whitehall and more concerning the Faerie Rule of the Past.

Of course, some aspects of the “War Against The Faerie” may relate to what Chris plans for Emily. 😉

      • Vstani April 27, 2017 at 11:22 pm #

I don’t want to read a detailed report of barb and voids first mission. I can only imagine what she went through. Reading about a char I like getting enslaved and raped would be about the most unpleasant reading imaginable.

dito Jared, any news on fist of justice? I look every day and hope the book is out…

  7. Don April 22, 2017 at 11:11 pm #

SIM spin off about The Gorgon (different point of view of Nameless World race and culture – racism) and Aloha (Elite overachiever) would be very interesting to read.

Nice to catch up on the Core Worlds, good decision

  9. G April 23, 2017 at 5:55 am #

You could do a 3 book series on what happens to Lord Whitehall, Bernard, and company–and whatever happened to Master Wolf!!! The mimic Wolf escaped, but whatever happened to the real magician…A Lady Barb prequel or two would also be interesting. Does anyone know what magical family Lady Barb is a member of? What is HER family’s position on Emily and will she bump into them at some point?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 23, 2017 at 1:17 pm #

Master Wolf was clearly (IMO) dead.

Of course, I’d love more stories set in Lord Whitehall’s times as well.

      • G April 23, 2017 at 7:07 pm #

We don’t know that Master Wolf is dead–all we know is that he created a mimic and copied a set of his memories into it. What if he created it under controlled conditions, stood back to test it on members of the commune, and lost control when the mimic was hit in the head with a hammer…in Emily’s time, whenever the out of control mimic killed someone they always found a body–Mr. Wolfe’s body was never found…

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 23, 2017 at 8:54 pm #

It might possible that the Master Wolfe that Emily saw murdered in front of her was actually a Mimic created by Master Wolfe.

However, IMO that Mimic would have immediately revealed itself after its body’s death.

As it was, it was hours after Master Wolfe’s death before his body became a Mimic.

I suspect that the Mimic was the result of a spell that Master Wolfe set up to activate after his death.

Of course, only Chris knows for sure. 😉

    • chrishanger April 23, 2017 at 6:54 pm #

      It’s a possibility. I’ve actually considered it.

      Chris

      • G April 23, 2017 at 8:24 pm #

Just for the fun of it, what if Master Wolfe had chased after his mimic when it got out of control, and later integrated his consciousness into a nexus point and is waiting to guide Emily (as his future depends on her life). It would explain why Void (who possesses amazing, Wolfe-like advanced spellwork) was willing to risk his life to rescue her…also, the “Red Shirts” (Emily’s 1st year martial magic squad) could re-unite to help Emily rescue Jade and Alassa in the Princess in the Tower…Sergeant Harkin quotes and all…

    • Blake April 26, 2017 at 12:47 am #

I’d really like this. I feel there would be a lot to explore with Lord Whitehall and company.

      • chrishanger April 30, 2017 at 7:41 am #

        We shall see …

        Chris

    • merr49 May 7, 2017 at 10:36 pm #

The mimic used soul magic not just a set of memory’s so when the mimic makes a copy of someone it literally rips out the persons soul so there can be no duplicate unless you do the moltiple body thing.
You know the one that couses insanity.

  10. Kell Harris April 23, 2017 at 7:16 am #

I think getting Freida’s perspective IE Freida goes to stronghold maybe we would get to see her grow without emily. Or even some Allasa perspective. Fun fun. I love Emily don’t get me wrong but emily is so into her own world it’s like she is oblivious to the rest of the world sometimes. kind of like me. The nameless world seems big and rich to explore. It can tie in or even have an emily cameo. It would be a nice touch even as a novella. Man can’t wait till Fists of justice.

Hey there. Ever thought of going back to you older books from Multiverse series? I recently read some of those (Bootstrap and Counterfactual War are my favorites).

    • chrishanger April 24, 2017 at 5:40 pm #

I’ve thought about it. But probably not.

      Chris

  12. Stuart the Viking April 24, 2017 at 3:17 pm #

Sounds good! I’ve been wondering if you would ever get around to taking up the story line of what happened to the rest of the Marines and the Marine dependents that were left behind. I’ve always wondered just how many of the Marines on Avalon have dependents and have no way of knowing what happened to them.

On another note… every time Void shows up, my brain automatically pencils in the Marvel Deadpool character. Weird, I know, does this happen to anyone else?

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 24, 2017 at 3:22 pm #

If Void was like Deadpool, he’d be hated more than he actually is in the Nameless World. 😉

Oh, yes I dislike Deadpool. How did you guess? 👿

  13. Paul W April 25, 2017 at 1:18 am #

Is the SIM story line taking a break then after FOJ? I remember you saying that you though you were going to do another 3 or so books after FOJ.

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 25, 2017 at 1:31 am #

Since I’ve seen Chris’ plot outlines for the next two SIM books, I think he’s still planning more.

Oh, mild spoiler, the end of SIM 14 tells us that another Book Better Come or somebody will go looking for Chris. 👿

    • chrishanger April 30, 2017 at 7:40 am #

Books 13-14 have been plotted, books 15-18 exist as notes, books 19-21 are concepts.

      Chris

      • FarWalker May 1, 2017 at 4:33 am #

That’s good news. Another two or three years worth of excellent reading.

      • James May 4, 2017 at 2:34 am #

Any plans for SIM crossover back to Earth, so Emily can pick up the copy of “How Stuff Works” that she’s always wanted?

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 4, 2017 at 3:24 am #

Chris has made it clear that it’s very difficult to travel between “worlds” in this series.

IIRC it would require some sort of deal between Emily or Void with extremely powerful & tricky beings.

The problem is that Emily/Void might not want to “pay the price” that such beings would charge.

      • chrishanger May 8, 2017 at 11:16 am #

No. It would upset things too much

        Chris

    SIM spinoff… Allassa… Forgot name…

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 25, 2017 at 2:07 pm #

Close, assuming that you’re talking about Crown Princess Alassa. 😉

Well, SIM 15 will be “Princess In The Tower” and Chris hasn’t told us what the result of that story will be.

Mind you, if the result of that story is what I suspect, a series following Alassa might give a different view of the politics resulting from Emily’s actions.

  15. Tony April 25, 2017 at 1:51 pm #

I also think a SIM spinoff would be fun to read. The subject could be Lady Barb, Void, or new characters. Anything that gives more insight into the nameless World that Emily finds herself in would be great. I’d also like a follow up that would identify who Cloak is (Void or someone else?).

    • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard April 25, 2017 at 1:58 pm #

I suspect that the identity of Cloak or the mysterious Master Sorcerer at the end of Wedding Hells (assuming they aren’t the same person) is something that Chris will keep hidden until Emily has to deal with him.

      • G April 25, 2017 at 4:18 pm #

At the end of the preface in Letters in Etiquette, the mysterious sorcerer tells Crow to Kill Emily. Would this fit with it being Void?

      • Daniel April 26, 2017 at 6:31 pm #

i feel like there are more players in the shadow then just the mystery sorcerer and cloak. i can’t point to the specific clues but it felt to me like several major players have only shown themselves in shadows so far

Can’t wait for zero blessing and empire corps

  17. Les Barrie (Scottish borders) April 26, 2017 at 10:07 am #

The empire core has always been by far my favourite by the core worlds stories are a big part of that and the hope that some sort of contact with the corp might be reestablished, I’ve not read any SIM so I have no opinion there and there are such a huge amount of young self published authors writing military SciFi that the waiting isn’t a painful these days !!!

  18. Jacob1248 April 27, 2017 at 10:08 pm #

I feel like you should make the spin off in the Schooled in Magic universe, but set before Emily arrives to change their world.

  19. Jared April 30, 2017 at 6:04 am #

I think it might be interesting to see the SIM universe from a mundane perspective. I think it would bring a little awe and mystery to the series, Well more so.

    • chrishanger April 30, 2017 at 7:49 am #

I may do that – I have several ideas in mind.

      Chris

      • Daniel May 1, 2017 at 11:36 pm #

to me from the mundane side would be interesting focused on the social upheavel happening due to emily’s concepts making thier way into the world. perhaps a smaller slightly isolatyed area with a weak king as the concept of democracy pushes itself into existance, or a hybrid a constitutional monarchy

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 1, 2017 at 11:42 pm #

One thing to remember about “weak Kings” is that they are weak compared to their nobles and the nobles aren’t likely to want to give commoners more power.

On the other hand, IIRC there have been kings who “gave” powers to the commoners so that the commoners might support the king when the king was fighting the nobles.

        It’s due for 20/6/2017

        Chris

  20. William Ameling May 2, 2017 at 1:21 am #

Most areas where Kings and Nobility are “weak” are like what we saw in book 4 where the land is so hostile to humans that the peasantry can barely survive (much less support a ruling class) and are too busy surviving to even think about Emily’s ideas on social reform.

The real areas for social progress are going to be the free merchant cities like Beneficence. They are already trying to maintain their independence from Kings and Barons, although minor nobility like the House of Waterfall and a lot of magicians apparently call it home. In fact those magicians probably have a lot to do with it keeping it’s independence, along with geographic/terrain factors.

That is why Emily will have a mixed reception there. They like her ideas and innovations, but they have to worry about her being the Baroness (in exile) of Cockatrice which is their direct neighbor. A marriage between her and House Waterfall has MANY potential results, not all of which help the City stay independent. Up until now, most residents of Beneficence were not aware of her Courtship, that is going to change soon. Particularly with Casper’s death and funeral, and Caleb now being the heir to his branch of House Waterfall. The upper class leaders of families and clans, both magicial and commercial, of the City will have a LOT to say about her potential marriage to Caleb when they become aware of it. It will not be all negative, but there will be a lot of fears and concerns, particularly about King Randor, and the big bad troubles in Swanhaven on their other side from Cockatrice.

A lot depends on what happens with Emily in the future. Having a powerful magician, like the Necromancer’s Bane, tied to the City has it’s advantages in addition to it’s problems. Plus there is the Bank of Silence and her ties to Marcus and Melissa, who are the disgraced heirs to powerful magicial families, but that could change in the future.(I would not be surprised to see that change after the fall of Fulvia from power). If they are restored to their families as joint heirs of a reunited family, Emily will have some powerful ties and favors owed to her.

    • Pixie Rhoades May 2, 2017 at 4:49 am #

New book needs to come out soon. 😩 None of mt authors are pushing a book out any time soon.

      • chrishanger May 5, 2017 at 4:36 pm #

        Monday, hopefully.

        Chris

  21. G May 2, 2017 at 5:10 am #

I’m not sure the Guildmasters of Beneficience will have any say in the marriage of Caleb and Emily, although the elders of house Waterfall will…more interestingly, Chris created an unresolved crises between King Randor and Emily when she was exiled at the end of Wedding Hells but is still the ruling Baroness…Randor’s enemies should be all over this…

    • William Ameling May 2, 2017 at 8:11 am #

True only House Waterfall has a direct say in the courtship. However, the heads of the other families and clans in Beneficence will certainly find ways of making their feelings known to House Waterfall and Caleb’s parents. I think in the long run that Caleb will end up marrying into House Cockatrice, rather than Emily into House Waterfall.

If Emily marries into House Waterfall what happens to House Cockatrice since Emily and Frieda (by adoption) are the only members? House Cockatrice would probably disappear. Frieda’s status, could be a minor sticking point with House Waterfall. The major concerns are King Randor, Princess Alassa, the Barony of Cockatrice, and Emily’s adoption by Void, making her his heir. Any and all of which probably outweigh and overpower House Waterfall’s interests and power by a lot. Not to mention, being the Necromancer’s Bane, and Child of Destiny.

      • G May 2, 2017 at 4:13 pm #

It’ll be interesting to see if Caleb can keep up with Emily in the long run…Caleb left Stronghold and moved to Whitehall because he dislikes combat training and instead enjoys magicalresearch…Emily, while outstanding academically, is also the premiere student of martial magic at Whitehall. Caleb ran away from combat training, Emily runs into the heart of every battle she encounters…I’m not sure Caleb gets this…but he will…politically, exiling high nobles in the European middle ages usually led to civil wars…

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard May 2, 2017 at 4:59 pm #

        ::Looking closely at Snerk Collar::

Some things mentioned in this thread will be answered in Fists Of Justice.

      • kell May 3, 2017 at 9:28 am #

I always felt like Caleb was a good first boyfriend material but not a good partner in the long run. Randor might have been on to something when he asked Emily what he brought to the marriage. From a different perspective Emily doesn’t care about power or wealth but… Caleb seems like the kind of guy that would want to protect Emily like in infinite regress. He wanted to follow Emily to war and didn’t want her to go in Sergeants Apprentice.

He’s the first guy that Emily ever liked (jade doesn’t really count here) I just see him not being able to keep up and that getting to him. While his mom may be a mediator and his dad a muggle his dad is a general. They have a related field.

Emily wants to be a teacher and I can see her opening a school together with Caleb as friends but I think her child of destiny thing, her need to save the world and be involved in the fight against Necromancers. I think its not something he wants or can keep up with. Caleb already felt insecure with her waiting to sleep with him. Imagine when Emily has to protect him? Or she has to leave him to save the world. I think also that the politics of their marriage and his new position might get to them. Plus I suspect that Emily with her lack of understanding to people in general might not realize that Caleb is having a problem until it is a big thing.
If Emily joined Caleb house I can see the patriarch of house waterfall feeling a little threatened in his position. Emily brings a lot of benefit but a lot of people see her as a loose cannon. I can’t wait to see what happens.

      • Paul W May 4, 2017 at 12:06 am #

Actually an accomplished academic may be exactly what Emily needs as a husband. It seems to me most “power couples” usually has a dominant partner an one that is a little quieter. From the female side take Margaret Thatcher and Angela Merkel as examples. There husbands are not as public in their accomplishments but it seems to have worked.

      • kell May 4, 2017 at 1:53 am #

It may work for Emily but will it work for Caleb? I think of the demon prophesy were she was kissing someone not Caleb. Some have speculated that this was Robin but the sequence of events sound different from the vision.

  22. FarWalker May 2, 2017 at 5:28 pm #

Audible just released Chris’s book “Democracy’s Right”. I have already downloaded it and plan to begin listening sometime later today. Narrated by Johnny Heller.

  23. William Ameling May 6, 2017 at 1:47 am #

I think that the example of his parents will help Caleb in his possible marriage to Emily. His father, a nonmagician, married into a House of Magicians, and yet their marriage seems quite successful. I am not saying that they had no problems or disagreements, but they were able to handle them and keep their marriage and family going.

It may take awhile, but Caleb may develope into a respected researcher, teacher, and possible administrator of a school of magic that he and Emily may establish. Emily needs someone to help her in developing her ideas for magic, and it HAS to be someone that she can trust TOTALLY with the information and ideas that she will be sharing with him. A husband that she chooses, i.e. not an arranged marriage, is her best chance to get this, particularly since he was already going in the direction of magical research. Her best other choice, besides Caleb, would be Aloha, for developing her ideas safely (and she has been used for that already for some ideas).

Where is she going to find a replacement for Caleb? Probably not at Whitehall, maybe at Stronghold. The problem is that most young men would be scared off by her reputation before they got to know her, and the rest would be power seekers who she could not easily learn to trust (or be deserving of that trust). The young men (some) at Stronghold will respect her magical abilities, but they are conditioned to respect battle fighting abilities as well, and Emily is not as physically strong or have the endurance as them.

  24. William Ameling May 8, 2017 at 1:50 am #

Because of her background from Earth and it’s technology, Emily can think of and see possibilities that natives to the Nameless World can not see. However, that same background can make it hard for her to see and understand things about the Nameless World that a native will see and understand very easily, which is why she will need a native person to help with her research and ideas, i.e. Caleb (or a replacement boyfriend) or possibly Aloha. The problem with a replacement boyfriend is all the time that she has spent getting to know and trust him, particularly as a BOY friend, i.e. going to bed with him (it will take her a long time to learn to trust another man in her bed). A new Boyfriend will make her have to spend a lot of time doing those same things again. Also what happens to the things that she has Already shared with him. If she breaks up with him, then those things are now at risk and out of her control. Also it might be hard for her to find a better set of prospective parents-in-law than Caleb’s parents. Both of his parents will be useful to her, and finding a good general married to a strong Mediator who have a unmarried son near Emily’s age who is interested in magical research, will not be easy.

    • Kell Harris May 8, 2017 at 2:46 am #

You make some good points however I would have to say that everybody in the world is a native and could give Emily a native perspective. As far as getting to know someone and trusting someone else. Emily is only like 20, she is also very immature. It would be difficult to say that she knows what she wants in a relationship and could only find it with Caleb alone.

As for Emily it’s only a matter of time before her background comes out. Emily plans on publishing her work with spells for her project. At the moment he doesn’t know anything that could endanger her in the long run. He doesn’t know about batteries etc. which Nattily might already know. As for the others he gave his world which is a big thing in their world. I just don’t think he is the only guy out there for her.

Politically and everything else doesn’t matter to me. For me Caleb has to prove somehow that he can handle being her partner. I don’t see his Mom and Dad as the end all be all for an example for Caleb. His parents though different are united. Caleb has already showed major signs of insecurity. Was it just the sex or are there other deep concerns? Emily keeps part of herself back. She holds part of herself back even with Caleb. Will Caleb be able to handle that? Will this break them up? I think a big part of Emily’s character development has yet to happen. Namely making allies and getting better at making friends. She is always in her own world Caleb was pretty brave to get so close to her so soon. There both intellectuals. But Emily is always going to be at the center of things. Going off to war. Fighting Necromancers. Going places he can’t follow. Caleb couldn’t even handle her fighting a dual. Things may be okay with Emily but Caleb? We have yet to see. This may be a bit long lol. I’m just bored waiting for the next book . I enjoy talking about this.
