Yep–More Updates

31 Jul

It’s been a week of ups and downs.

To sum up a long story, we flew back to London from Kuala Lumpur on the 20th and spent a few days in London. This was evidently a mistake, as I somehow managed to contract food poisoning (or something) on the 22nd. Having spent the night throwing up, I then had to fly back to Edinburgh (to our new house) while feeling distinctly unsteady on my feet.

Being in a house we bought as a semi-permanent home – at least for the next few years – is definitely different. On one hand, we can fill it as we please; on the other hand, we have come across a series of snags that will have to be tackled at some point. Moving the rest of my books into the house may take some time.

But, on the good side of things, I have managed to finish the first draft of Unlucky, right on the deadline.

And, in other pieces of news, the paperback edition of Fear God and Dread Naught is up now, while the audio version of Schooled In Magic should be available for pre-order now. It should be out around the 15th August.

I’ve been very pleased, of course, with sales of both Fear God and Dread Naught and Past Tense. Past Tense actually edged its way into the top 100 sellers on Amazon Kindle, which did my ego (and wallet) a lot of good. There’s also been a great deal of demand for Book 11 – The Sergeant’s Apprentice – but that may take some time.

I’m currently learning towards writing Ragnarok, the third and last book in Twilight of the Gods next. While it only exists as a set of notes – so far – it’s a change from writing science-fiction and I have a commitment to turn in Book 4 of Angel in the Whirlwind (provisionally entitled ‘The Hammer of God’) by the end of September. After that, I think I’ll finally get around to writing Culture Shock (The Empire’s Corps 13).

But that will come after a great deal of editing. I’m hoping to run through a long series of edits for the first few The Empires Corps books over the next week, then start turning them into paperback books.

Thanks – again – to everyone who commented, wrote a review, etc.

    P. S. do you know if they are doing only the first book of SIM or the whole series…

    • chrishanger August 2, 2016 at 9:31 pm #

The whole series. Unfortunately, it takes longer to produce the audio version than the ebook.

Just finished book 10 of Empire Corps. Your knowledge and insights on geopolitics is spot on. Appreciate the story. Keep them coming.

I still don’t understand why Emily does create a nuke grenade by binding her nuke spell to a wand that is set to go off after a specific amount of time. She could literally create a strike force that could teleport a nuke into all the necromancer fortresses at the same time you could probably wipe 90% of them out with a synchronized strike. As for the risk of the nuke spell getting out could you not inlay and spell layer around the central spell that effectively ‘scrambles’ the spell’s DNA long enough for it to be uncopiable?

    • Issac August 4, 2016 at 2:29 am #

because the only thing holding the allied lands together is the threat of the necromancers… think of it this way… WWII brought together many people that would have loved to kill each other… taking out the axis powers lead to the dissolution of the allied block, with each group maneuvering for strategic advantage… now you want to add portable nukes to every person with the ability to form magic… it would be every nuclear strategist worst nightmare… also she might be the one responsible for the craters she saw from dragons back… of the top of my head I do not remember, but wasn’t the dark lady in different time periods…

      • Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard August 4, 2016 at 2:36 am #

Well, the only Dark Lady mentioned was the one who was part of the founding of the Whitehall School which was prior to the first Faerie War.

While Emily is that Dark Lady, she returns prior to the first Faerie War.

So unless Chris sends Emily back in time again, she isn’t responsible for those craters. 😉

LOVE your books I have all that are on audio

  12. Michael M October 22, 2016 at 4:47 pm #

    Hi Chris,
I just finished reading the complete SIM series for the 4th time and bookworm for the 3rd time. I’m really starting to get a bit bored 😉.
Are you really sure you can’t at least share some ideas you have on SIM11?
I just can’t wait to get started on helping to check your drafts, just as I did with the last 6 books.

    Cheers, MM
