UP NOW–They Shall Not Pass! (The Empire’s Corps XII)

8 Mar

The continuing adventures of The Empire’s Corps …

Despite the escape from Meridian – and a strike at the heart of Wolfbane – enemy forces are still advancing on all fronts. The Commonwealth, worn down by a year of hard fighting, is reaching the end of its tether, while Admiral Singh – having secured control of Wolfbane – is searching for the breaking point that will shatter the Commonwealth once and for all. Time is needed, time to bring new weapons and tactics into service, but time is the one thing the Commonwealth doesn’t have.

Now, with enemy forces closing on the industrialised world of Corinthian – Admiral Singh’s former base of operations – Colonel Stalker decides to make a stand. The Commonwealth will meet its enemies on the ground and destroy them – or die trying. They will not pass as long as a single marine remains alive.

But how much of Corinthian – and the Commonwealth – will survive the nightmare to come …?

Any news on it’s audiobook release?

    • chrishanger March 10, 2016 at 8:54 pm #

Not as yet. Probably at least two months.

Cool, just in time for my audible subscription to be renewed. As a reader who can’t see ebooks (or regular ones for that matter) thank you for publishing your books on audio (Your one of 7%) and getting good readers.

When are we going read about the Commandant and the young Emperor? Will the make it to Avalon? Curious minds want to know.

    • chrishanger March 10, 2016 at 9:01 pm #

      Eventually, they will link up.

I can’t wait for that. That will start a whole new arc, or be the final chapter in this wonderful series. Thanks

Sigh, I have a typo to report: … cursed under her breath, then signed in relief as a plasma warhead found one of the AFVs.

Nuttall, Christopher (2016-03-07). They Shall Not Pass (The Empire’s Corps Book 12) (Kindle Locations 4557-4558). . Kindle Edition.

I enjoy your books, all of them. I appreciate your use of dialogue and action to develop the story line. Your characters are consistent, and the one’s you keep around are developed with sympathy, even the bad guys and gals. Too many of your colleagues write technical instruction manuals, which really flops with fantasy and modern (fantasy) sci-fi.

I’m wondering why Leo Caesius has no knowledge of the Magna Charta nor the once hopeful U. S. Constitution. I really enjoyed your depiction of the Imperial Senate while enduring the first four years of Obama. Your power-mad Senate is obviously the futuristic culmination of our experiment in D. C. But the progression in the real world is obviously not predictable, although the trend is monotonic. The recent interlude with McConnell, et al, has shown that cowards and fools can also participate in the destruction of a democracy, albeit unwittingly even as they pretend to fight the good fight.

I liked your Afterword in They Shall Not Pass. Western leaders for the past 120 years, with the sole exception of Winston Churchill, have been a sorry lot. Asquith, Baldwin, Chamberlain, FDR, Woodrow Wilson, Nixon, Carter, LBJ, Clinton, and Obama, what a rogues gallery. And the Bushes were too prissy to even bother to battle. I can’t see how Europe will dig itself out from its present difficulties without resort to totalitarianism unless a few real liberals, meaning someone concerned about individual rights under the law, can find a way to dismantle the welfare state. And my great fear is that the millions of angry young men you’ve embraced from the Middle East, refuges no doubt, may turn out to be the Brown Shirts, and the totalitarianism that emerges will be a theocracy.

I see the latest magical adventure has just been posted. I enjoy those as well, which surprised me.

PS: WSC was not perfect, as your notes about interference by radio in WWI illustrates. But he did have a geopolitical outlook, and he understood the importance of keeping Russia in the war. Elizabeth Moon wrote a little what-if short story wherein the on-scene British commanders found a way to ignore their contradictory orders and prevented the German-Ottoman alliance. The rest of the British government simply accepted the slaughter of the trenches and carried on with the genocide of the male population in young adult cohort. And the Soviet colossus was the enduring legacy of their folly.

      DOH! Thank you!

I’m not keen on infodumping vast levels of data into my books – it’s useful when I want to explain something, but otherwise clogs up space.

The short answer is that there are limits to what Leo knows – and limits to what survived thousands of years between then and now.

I wish I was more hopeful about the future too. But I’m not.

How about a few colonies with a strong flavor of the Swiss militia obligation, less the central bankers who have managed to replace 25%of the Swiss work force with Euro-immigrants, who will not participate in the defense of Switzerland?

What on earth are these Swiss “elites” thinking? Creating a disgruntled underclass while rubbing their noses in the ground as they and their children lose influence in the country that they are supposed to defend is madness. The same can be said of the UK, but in a duty-free welfare wrapper. All those supporters of Labor seem to have no conception of the consequences that will spring from their actions in just a few short years. Sharia is incompatible with the rights of Englishmen (and women)! And the Conservatives are hell bent on phony money and surrendering to the continent. Or so I gather from 122 degrees west longitude of ground zero, er … Greenwich.

Could it be that in a nuclear age, civilization will fall to illiterates wielding knives? Oh well.

Really enjoyed this book. In my mind I saw the battle as a combination of the Western Front and Stalingrad. The POV of some sympathetic enemy characters was interesting and I would like to see more of CAPT Osborne and GEN Haverford in future books.

And the Afterword is spot on.

I just finished it myself and I have to agree with Lindsay. This book was hard to put down.

Will we ever hear the whole story of the Tyrant Emperor?

    • chrishanger May 29, 2016 at 8:15 am #

I’m not sure – it depends how much of it i can work into the story.

  6. Micah June 21, 2016 at 2:08 am #
