LonCon and Other News

5 Aug

Hi, everyone

The good news, right now, is that we have permission (finally) to live in the UK. We’re going to travel (barring complete disaster, which is alarmingly possible right now) on the 14th – hopefully, after I’ve finished the first draft of The Thin Blue Line (The Empire’s Corps IX).

I’m planning to be at LonCon (http://www.loncon3.org/) for Saturday and Sunday (16-17th August). I don’t have a definite schedule yet, but I intend to spend some time at the Elsewhen Press table, in between exploring the rest of the convention. (It’s my first real convention.) If you’re going to be in London at the time, drop me a note and see if we can meet up.

Congratulations on getting the paperwork sorted out to live in the UK. There is a lot going on at Loncon3 on the Saturday and Sunday including the masquerade and Hugo Awards. The programme schedule has been published on-line, so you can look for panels or talks are of interest to do a little advance planning. There is a pretty strong science stream including a talk by the astronomer royal.

Chris, you ever come to the States????

Not since I was very young (I vaguely recall Boston). We’re planning to visit in April, depending on how things shake out, then move for a year or so if we like it. Chris Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2014 15:29:23 +0000 To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com

Moving is a pain in the ass. Hopefully everything goes smoothly. When will you make the permanent move?

      Hopefully, on the 14th. Chris Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2014 17:45:34 +0000 To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com

I feel your pain, I had to move twice last year and that was within the same country, a mere 1000 miles. International shipping across two oceans has got to be a pain.

On the other hand, if everything gets past the Pirates in Somalia and the disease outbreak in West Africa it should be fine.

Unless it crosses the Pacific, through the Canal and the to the UK, which should be fairly painless and safe.

Last time, it took about two months. Luckily, we won’t be going elsewhere this time. Chris Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2014 20:17:27 +0000 To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com

Taking up the life of a English country squire working on his literary works or better yet a crabby Scotsman in a stone cottage working on his writings?

They both sound appealing But we may move elsewhere in a year or so. Maybe spend some time in the US. Chris Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2014 17:23:47 +0000 To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com

I’d recommend Washington State where we’re truly free.

90 days residency gets you a concealed carry permit, where upon you can purchase and go home with guns on the same day. Did I mention you can buy as many and in whatever variety you want up to a fully automatic weapon?

You can smoke your pot on the first day if you like.

WA state where you’re free to smoke what you please and carry what you need. That’s true freedom. Oh, no state or local income tax either.

Sounds ideal . What are the prices like? Chris Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2014 05:43:28 +0000 To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com

If you like Suburban living 30 miles outside of Seattle you can buy a relatively new 4 bedroom 2000 square foot house for around $250K US.

If you like country living you can get the same plus a couple acres of land for around the same price.

Or you can get a 2 or 3 bedroom town house close to Seattle if you want to go urban.

The weather in the Seattle area is moderate, never too cold or too hot. It does get hot and cold, but just certain months of the year and the rain isn’t as bad as people think it’ll be.

Of course you can choose Southern WA on the Oregon border. Vancouver WA. The advantage of that is you can just cross the bridge into Portland and shop Tax free. No sales tax in Oregon where you shop and no state Income tax in WA where you live.

Writing for a living lets you live where you’re comfortable. Might as well Max out the geographic advantages

I hate to rain on an author’s parade, but I wanted to comment on a flaw I detected in Ark Royal III in Chapter 40. The segment I am referring to takes place when Prince Henry is having a conversation with someone named Forsyth. Midway through this segment it appears that Prince Henry is talking to someone named Winchester. Then as the segment concludes it appears that Prince Henry has been talking to Forsyth and not someone named Winchester.

They’re different people – Forsyth is the asshole, Winchester is being more of a Reasonable Authority Figure (YMMV, of course.) Chris Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2014 05:16:35 +0000 To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com

Any news of when The Empire’s Corps IV is coming out? Been chomping at the bit for any news. I’ve been going back to the books of side stories like “When the Bough Breaks” and “The Outcast” to fill up my time
