Nice and interesting read. But I think you are overly optimistic about how long a “real” battle involving magicians would take.
It would probably involve massive amounts of stones and flamable materials being hurled by (shielded) trebuchets, wasps, and magicians to deplete shields and kill off non-magician combatant. The magicians probably keep each other occupied while the other combatants kill each other. If petrol or destilled alcohol was known, it may be piped to the expected battle ground and then ignited. Not a happy place.
A mach 3-5 stone/piece of iron powered by an angry magician would punch trough a lot of troops. Or do serious damage unshielded fortifications.
In order for the combatants survive for any reasonable time, the magicians would have to anchor the shields to something heavy. Otherwise too much magic would be used to push against the stones. If there were no push, the magician would be squished by any sizable stone if the shield was anchored in him/her.
The ground around fortifications might be doctored to keep the attaching magicians from anchoring the shields in something heavy. Forcing them to expend more magic for protection.
