Next Books, General Updates, Etc.

5 Dec

Hi, everyone

I’m currently 3/4ths of the way through Work Experience (Schooled In Magic IV). After that, I’m leaning towards several different possibilities. As always, comments are welcome.

Ark Royal features the crew of an old interstellar carrier as they find themselves on the frontlines against an enigmatic alien foe.

Learning Experience (may be renamed) starts when a group of aliens decide that abducted humans will make good slaves. They very rapidly learn the error of their ways, starting humanity’s expansion into the galaxy.

The Resistance (a rewrite of an older novel) features an alien race invading Earth, only to lose a handful of starships to humanity. It sounds similar to the book above, but it isn’t the same at all. Probably.

Thunder and Lightning is another rewrite; basically, in 2100, humanity has spread through the solar system and is building the first STL interstellar starship. But a fleet of STL alien ships is heading towards Earth with bad intentions … Generally, I want this to be hard-SF, rather than soft-SF.

Please cast a vote for which one you’d like to see first.

I’m also working out the plot for Retreat Hell (The Empire’s Corps VIII) and Necropolis (The Royal Sorceress III).

To some extent, I’m having problems thinking of suitable topics for Leo’s lectures and the afterwords. Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

I’m also planning some Christmas promotions so watch this space.

In other news, The Very Ugly Duckling (Bookworm II) will be out January 3rd.

Thanks for reading.

Chris

I think that Learning Experience does sound interesting.

For topics for Leo, have you thought about having him talk/write about the difference between a voluntary military vs. a conscripted/drafted one? Also possible have him talk about how military/emergency services folks are putting their life in front of their fellow citizens, and how that help/hurts a society?

That’s a good idea. I will need to do some more reading first. (No downside there ) Chris > Date: Thu, 5 Dec 2013 19:28:26 +0000 > To: christopher_g_nuttall@hotmail.com >

Heinleins ideas in starship troopers may give an (obvious) starting point. I would like to add to that (in contrast to his points) the not very original point that if the professional (i .e. voluntary) military does NOT restrict the vote to it’s – former – members the apparent costs to society of going to war go WAY down. (The situation a number of western democracies arguably find themselves in today). And it also may be a bad idea to have current serving members make up a large proportion of the vote (addressed by H by only giving veterans the franchise). The final problem I see is do we also restrict the political class to veterans and how does that influence the political decisions and direction of society (this could result in some very BAD decisions due to a.lack of checks and balances).

Learning Experiences sounds like it could be fun.

The Ark Royal snippet you wrote was good too.

I feel like Resistance is too similar to Outside Context Problem and Invasion

Ark Royal and Learning Experience sound like a fun read. Out of curiosity what are the original novels that you are rewriting?

I am sorry for not being more clear. What are the original titles and are they from your free download collection? The rewrites in the Democracy series have been very good.

    Hi Chris,
They all sound good but the Ark Royal piqued my interest the most.

Learning Experience and Thunder and Lightning sounds interesting.

Ark Royal. It sounds similar to some of the scifi from the 1970s and early 80s, of the Niven/Pournelle variety.

I join the crowd and strongly vote for Ark Royal.

Ark royal may be the most interesting (but not necesarily the most original)

As for Leo’s lectures, how about the effect of science literacy – or lack thereof – of both the political class and the general populance – and it’s results on political decisions for funding and otherwise – it seems a timely topic at least here in the US. I admit to this being sparked by a snippet of Carl Sagan’s last interview (see: http://www.upworthy.com/a-science-icon-died-17-years-ago-in-his-last-interview-he-made-a-warning-that-gives-me-goosebumps-5?g=2&c=fea he apparently died 17yr ago this month).
